Sounds like bad RAM and/or low Virtual memory. To check your RAM:Testing with Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org . Download the .iso to make a bootable cd. Burn the file with 3rd party burning software as an image, not as data. A good 3rd party software is www.imgburn.comWhen you find out if your RAM is bad or good, I would go out and buy 1GB RAM, you will need to buy 2 "Sticks" of it.Find out what kind of motherboard you have and go to a PC shop, or some kind of electronics/computer store (With your motherboard info) And tell them you need bigger RAM for your Windows XP computer. You most likely need to increase your Virtual memory size:Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then clickProperties. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.In the Performance pane, click Settings. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.In the Virtual memory pane, click Change.Change the Initial size value and the Maximum size value to a higher value, clickSet, and then click OK.Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then clickOK to close the System Properties dialog boxYoung and learning...Have mercy - ChaosIf this post resolves your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" buttons. Chaos_Edit - Once again you are giving wrong and possibly destructive advice. The errors that "harbourdog" are getting rarely have anything to do with physical memory (RAM) and telling people to change their virtual memory settings in this situation can cause serious problems."harbourdog" - The most common reason for the symptoms your computer shows is malware infection. Please start with the basic troubleshooting for this and post back with the results for further help.Do NOT change virtual memory settings.http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_MalwareIf you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). If possible, have all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Thank you for all the advice, but because I'm clueless about this stuff, I think I had better take my computer into a repair place......how do i do a safe disk cleaning of the c drive or is that recommended?

I'm not sure what you mean by a "safe disk cleaning". I think your decision to take the computer to a professional is the best one. A reputable professional can retrieve your data and do the diagnostics/fixes required for you.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

If you are low on memory, the amount of diskspace you have is not relevant. So tell us how much RAM you have and what applications you run. Also windows freeze and get not responding quite often, and Internet Explorer very slow starting, freezes and sometimes closes without warning....what can be causing this.....thanks in advance. There's no way to be sure, but with symptoms like that the first thingto check for very carefully is malware infection. What anti-virusprogram and anti-spyware programs do you run? Are they kept up todate?Ken Blake
