skydrive.exe crashes on Windows 8.1 Pro RTM

I'm trying to get Skydrive working on a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro RTM.  When I go to Skydrive (show my files in skydrive) via the "metro" app, the view is empty.  When I look at the skydrive folder in explorer.exe, it's also empty.

I went to a command prompt running as an administrator and ran "skydrive /shutdown" followed by "skydrive" in order to reboot skydrive.  When I attempt to start skydrive, I get two entries in the Event Log.  The second event viewer message refers to a file named Report.wer that contains info about the crash.  I've attached the contents of both eventvwr entries and the contents of Report.wer.

I'm wondering if this has anything to do with Skydrive Pro being installed by the Office 2013 installer that comes from my Office 365 subscription.

Any thoughts on how to fix skydrive.exe?

Thanks,

-Ben

please download this reg file from my SkyDrive:

http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/LocalDumps.reg

and make a double click on the file to import it.

When an application crashes (like SkyDrive), Windows Error Reporting Service [1] creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the dump (zip it first) to your public Skydrive [2] folder and post the link here. I take a look at the dump with the Debugger, maybe I can see the cause.

BTW, now that I've added that windows dump config to the registry, how do I disable that?

Hi Andre --

Another thing that I noticed is that Skydrive seems to be running from time to time and creating additional Skydrive folders in my profile directory.  Yesterday afternoon there were ~60 of these folders and i deleted them.  Since then there are 6 new ones (see screenshot below).  All these folders are empty.

I'm wondering if I'm simply running in an unsupported configuration.  There are two things that make my install odd:

1) my workstation is joined to an ActiveDirectory Domain.  It seems like lots of other people on the internet(s) are having similar problems.  It's not clear from that Skydrive is actually even *supposed* to work in this config.

2) I subscribe to Office 365.  O365's installer installs something called SkyDrive Pro 2013.  I wonder if these simply can't run side-by-side.  Translation: if you subscribe to Office 365, perhaps you can't also use Skydrive on Windows 8.1 anymore.

Thanks,

I don't use SkyDrive Pro/Office 365, so I can't say how this work.
October 25th, 2013 2:17pm

We are experiencing the exact same issue at my workplace, we are currently testing Win8.1.

I currently have 6 *.old Skydrive folders in my user profile and constantly see the same error message as you Ben.

I am an Active Directly user aswell, with a new Microsoft account linked to it.

We are using Office 2013, I do not believe we have Office 365.

Hi jfleveille--

What was your process for deleting your broken profile off of the workstation?  I went to Control Panel (the "classic" version), went to User Accounts, and then deleted the profile.  I rebooted and then every time, I'd get a temporary profile instead of the workstation creating a new local profile.

As an experiment, I created a completely new user on my domain and logged in to this workstation.  Just like Pantonious, Skydrive was still horked.  When I opened the Skydrive app it said "Your SkyDrive couldn't be created on this PC."

I'm not sure if this is related but I'm currently running into problems with Windows Search not indexing control panel, OneNote, or Outlook entries.  I think that there's a theme here regarding Win 8.1 workstations that are joined to an Active Directory Domain.  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/730a8982-b062-4314-9b71-bca3721b498c/windows-81-search-is-broken-for-workstations-joined-to-active-directory-domain?forum=w8itprogeneral

I think I found a fix!

I went looking at %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\SkyDrive\logs and found some messages in the SyncEngine*.etl files in that dir.  (BTW, Visual Studio wants to open those *.etl files but it doesn't show anything.  It's easier to open these files in Notepad and wade through the mess of hex.  Eventually, you'll come to readable text.)  The messages were:

1) Failed to show/hide SkyDrive Shell Items, error code: 0x80070002
2) Unable to correctly read and parse the ClientPolicy.ini file

A quick search brought up some posts complaining about the Win-X shortcut being broken.  (link)  I tried my Win-X key and it was indeed not working.  That forum discussion led to another forum post about Skydrive generating a lot of extra empty Skydrive folders in the user profile dir.

These posts suggested some commands to run from an Administrative command prompt.

I had exactly the same issue. Same behaviour with Win-X although I thought it had to to with the virtual installation of Win 8.1. I ran the script as suggested and hey! - both issues are gone. THANK YOU a thousand times, Ben.

Hey everyone, just wondering if there was another solution to the problem. Ben-I tried running those commands, but still no good. I have one PC that won't sync-it's complaining about a file that doesn't exist anymore (locally or on the cloud).  Short of recreating the user profile completely, anything else you can think of that might work?

Please mak sure you install the new updates from current Patchday. I also see that the SkyDrive sync engine got an update. Maybe it fixes the crashes.

I'm seeing errors such as:

I've applied today's patches without any success.

I'm seeing errors such as:

localchanges.cpp:3603!addFileIfExists (ERROR): Path difference detected between '%MountPoint%\Mike\SAP\SAP-SU~1.rtf' and '%MountPoint%\Mike\SAP\SAP-SU~1-Contact-857.rtf'

filesystem.cpp:2314!FileSystemUtil::CreatePlaceholderFile (ERROR): Failed to Save the placeholder file, error: 0x80070050

localchanges.cpp:8144!HandleMaximumAllowedPlaceholderRetries (CRITICAL): FAILED: Maximum allowed retries on the placeholder changes, type: 5

syncstatus.cpp:684!SyncStatus::InitializeGlobalErrorFromDisk (NORMAL): Initializing SyncStatus with state 0 saved on root folder %UserProfile%\SkyDrive

Looking for advice, if anyone has figured it out. :)

Cheers

Mike

I ran the script. No good. SkyDrive.exe keeps starting and crashing. This is on my desktop system running Windows 8.1 Pro. I have a laptop that is also running Windows 8.1 Standard edition, both have Office 365 installed. It works fine on the laptop. I have no idea what is different. I do not have a Windows Domain installed. I am using Microsoft accounts on both machines.
