sip entry under exchange user smtp properties

hello

what is the purpose of lync adding the SIP:first.last@company.com on the exchange user properties?

what happens if its not there?

does it use it for free busy informatioin

It's used for Exchange UM. If it's not there and you use Exchange UM for voicemail you will have routing issues getting calls to go to the mailbox.

SIP address doesn't play any function to publish the free busy information in the exchange server. SIP address are used for Lync IM communication.

If you remove the SIP address from the user properties the impact will to the lync and not on the user mailbox.

SIP address under Exchange user SMTP properties is used for

  1. Integration between Lync and EWS
  2. Integration between Lync and UM {Voice mail}

If Sip address doesn't exist in SMTP properties, The Integration between Lync and Exchange won't worked.

  • Access conversation history and voice mail
  • Play back voice mail message
  • Display free/busy information and working hours
  • Display meeting subject, time, and location
  • Display Out of Office status and note
  • Exchange contact sync
  • Search Outlook personal contacts
