sharing internet connection over windows 7 (host) and xp(client)
hi all, just found this forum, having searched and searched for about 5 hrs looking for a solution.hope someone here has gotten over this particular problem. i have a laptop and desktop machine that connect via a crossover cable.when laptop was on xp (Desktop also on xp) i could share anything between the two machines as im administrator on both. never an issue.then upgraded my laptop to windows 7 enterprise - i still connect via the crossover cable, and i can share files between the two machines with no problem. BUT when it comes to the internet connection is where my issue comes in. the lapttop (windows7) connects to internet via a 3G card, and can surf without an issue. Suddenly my xp machine can't browse a lot of websites. the only site that really comes up is google and every other website i go to-nothing! i can see in the status bar, that the website is found, but the progress bar only reaches about 2/3 of the way, and nothing more! on the windows7 laptop, i dont have a problem surfing, but my xp machine seems to have trouble sharing this connection now, since i upgraded the laptop to windows 7.iv even tried setting the xp's mtu setting to a vlue that doesn't give that "FRag" error msg, in the registry, but to no avail. iv also tried setting the xp's primary dns to the windows 7 ip, and the secondary, to the actual internet connection's ip-nada! I have no idea what else to try. I truly hope someone here can help me - as I'm not to keen on buying a router just for these two machines! the only other cost effective solution i have is to downgrade my laptop back to xp,and i don't really want to... thanks, -bB

Hi, As I understand, you connect Windows 7 to Windows XP via a crossover cable. Windows 7 uses a 3G card connecting to internet , while Windows 7 shares the internet connection with Windows XP. If I misunderstand, please feel free to let me know. If it is the case, I would like to provide the following suggestions: 1. Clear the Hosts file and DNS cache. Step 1: Clear the Hosts file 1) Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the path: %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc. 2) Right-click on the file Hosts and choose Delete. Step 2: Clean up the Domain Name Resolution (DNS) cache 1) Click the Start and click All Programs. 2) Click Accessories and click Command Prompt. 3) Type: ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter. Then test if it works. 2. Ping the website and IP address. 1) On Windows XP machine, ping a website such as: www.microsoft.com If you can’t ping the website, please continue the step: 2) On Windows 7 machine, type: nslookup www.microsoft.com to resolve the IP address. 3) Then go back to Windows XP machine, ping the IP address instead. 3. Directly connect the 3G card to Windows XP and test if the machine can access the internet correctly. 4. In Windows 7, you can download a free software called Connectivity to turn your Windows 7 Computer Into a WiFi Router, then connect your Windows XP to Windows 7. For detailed steps, I would like to share the following page: Turn Your Windows 7 Computer Into a WiFi Router In 5 Minutes, Free & No Hardware Easily Turn Windows 7 Computer Into WiFi Hotspot to Share Wireless Internet Connection Please note: we provide the third party link for technical use only. Dear Dale Qiao, My problem is almost identical to the one you solved. I have a crossover cable between a Windows 7 laptop and one running XP SP3. I have full file and printer sharing established. The host and client both indicate that I have internet access. I can ping numberic IP addresses; but not www.microsoft.com, www.yahoo.com, or www.google.com. I get an error 12007 from my client XP machine, when looking for the webpage. I have tried everything you listed above with no progress. Can you suggest somehting else. I do not have a 3G card. I am having a simular problem but I am connecting 2 other machines through a router networked to my system that is running windows 7.I can not connect the router directly to the modem because I do not have a modem.my system has the direct net connection by way of a satelite card.I need to know y the other computers on the network are not even picking up the internet they are not connecting at all but the network is fine cause printers and files can be shared with no problems.I attempted the steps above but not even my machine that does have direct net connection could ping the microsoft website.internet connection just wont seem to enable on the other computers on the network.I have the ICS enabled for the windows 7 system and when setting up the network on the others chose that int connected through a residential gateway or another computer.will this just not work with a router?are routers only meant to split connection amongst systems?I havnt tried the direct thing yet but I have more then just the 2 systems I have 2 others I need to connect to the network through my system.please help me with this asap.

This all seems simple, but doesn't seem to work. I have 2 machines. One runs windows 7, the other is xp. They are connected by a Netgear 5 port switch. The machines can share files with no problem. I can set it up with the 3G USB card in the xp machine and it shares the connection with the Windows 7 machine with no problem. When I change the setup around so the Windows 7 machine is the host, the xp machine cannot see the internet. Ping fails even for numbered addresses. The simple solution would be to have the xp machine be the host and just stop messing with it. However, the xp machine is a laptop and the windows 7 machine is a desk top. I would like to be able to just plug my laptop into the network and have things work.

dB, You described my exact problem in different words. I have spent not hours but many days looking for a solution. I have not given up and keep researching possiblities. I know there are work-arounds; but nothing that gives me the 100 Mbs transmission rate. I guess the easiest is with a router, but that gives about 54 Mbs not good enough. I too, can connect through the XP machine and it is a puzzel to me why the more advanced Windows 7 has a problem. My guess is that it has something to do with security. I saw a suggestion that adding a gateway on the Windows 7 machine was the answer. I did this an saw the indation that I now had internet connectivity; but when I went to the XP I still got the same message. Please post if you find the answer. Thanks, MichaelMichael A. Miller

This may seem trivial but worth asking. Are both computers configured to obtain IP settings automatically? both computers must be set as dhcp clients while the host with ICS enabled will supply the DNS and DHCP services.

Can you send a picture of what the network connection looks like? Does it indicate that you have allowed internet access on the "public" or "work" network? This is done by putting in a default gateway. Once this is done you must go to the "XP" laptop and put in a DNS address 8.8.8.8 which is Google or similar to allow for internet access on the "XP" laptop. This assumes that you have established internet access on the Windows 7 computer. This solved my problem and I now have full internet access on both machines.Michael A. Miller
