sharing files between windows 7 x64 and windows xp x64 does not work
Hi. I have three machines: A. windows 7 x64 B. windows xp pro x64 sp2 C. windows xp pro x86 sp3 All machines have the latest microsoft updates I am able to share files between the two xp machines without issues. I use the same username on all three machines but different passwords and when I try to access a network resource, i am asked for my username and password and everything works as expected. However, when I try share files between the windows 7 x64 and windows xp x64 machines, I cannot get them to work. On windows 7 x64, double clicking on the machine in the "Network" folder or manually typing \\machineB (either the hostname or ip address) results in the error: "Windows cannot access \\machineB" Error code 0x80070035 The network path was not found. On windows xp x64, double clicking on the machine in the "My Network Places\Entire Network\Microsoft Windows Network\Workgroup" folder or manually typing \\machineA (either the hostname or ip address) results in the error: "\\machineA is not accessible. You might not have permission to use..." "The semaphore timeout period has expired." Fortunately, everything works as expected when sharing files between windows 7 x64 and windows xp x86. Any ideas? Thank you.

I don't know what your level of network experience is, so I'll start with the basics http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Networking-home-computers-running-different-versions-of-WindowsMCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. Thanks for the reply. All three computers are on the same workgroup. On the windows 7 x64 machine, network discovery is turned on, file and printer sharing is turned on, and public folder sharing is turned on. I also tried turning off the windows firewall, but I get the same results. All machines can ping the others.

on win7 open your local security policy and set security options for Network Security: Lan manager authenticationlevel to use NTLMv2 if negotiated (2nd option in list) It shouldn't be necessary, but it helps sometimes. Also try disabling UAC I have win7 ultimate x64 & XP64 w/SP2 working together without issue & without any policy changes, but many people do for some reason.

Hi, Based on my research, please try the following: 1. Try to access the share folders by “\\XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX<IP Address>\folder” and see how it works. 2. Disable simple file sharing on Windows XP computers How to disable simple file sharing and how to set permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP 3. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all computers: 1) Go to “Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections”. 2) Right-Click on the connection and choose Properties. 3) Click “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4” in the list. 4) Click Properties, and then click Advanced. 5) On the Advanced TCP/IP settings windows, go to “WINS” tab. 6) Under NetBIOS setting, click “Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP”, and then click OK. 4. On the Windows 7 computer, please go to “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings” and ensure that the following items are turned on: Network Discovery File and printer sharing And this one is OFF: Password protected sharing Hope this helps. Thank you for all the replies. I believe this is only an issue with vmware workstation 7.0.1 and have created a thread here: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/254595
