serious error message
Remember - This is a public forum so never post private information such as email or phone numbers! Ideas:Every morning my computer has a message that it has recovered from a serious problem and then lists ways to correct it. i have tried these methods short of restoring to earlier date because for some reason my calendar won't go back to March before these problems started. Does the message include the Stop Error? Stop Errors look similar to: Stop Error 0x0000007E (usually four sets of numbers in parenthesis) and possibly a reference to a particular file such as atapi.sys. Without knowing this, there is no way for us to troubleshoot your computer in a forum. The problem could be caused by software (infection, bad drivers) or hardware components that have failed. Please provide more information about the Stop Error and your computer, including its approximate age and the answer to The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't? If you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad).MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

My error message reads: Blue screen error caused by a device or driver You received this message because a hardware device, its driver, or related software has caused a blue screen error. This type of error means the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from potential data corruption or loss. In this case, we were unable to detect the specific device or driver that caused the problem. The following troubleshooting steps might prevent the blue screen error from recurring. Try them in the order given. If one step does not solve the problem, then move on to the next one. Steps to solve this problem Download and install the latest updates and device drivers for your computer Scan your computer for viruses Check your hard disk for errors I did the last 2 but not sure about drivers. I have auto update. My computer is a Compaq Presario about 5 years old. The only thing i did was install NORTON SECURITY and UTILITIES which had just expired. There was no stop erro message or numbers. :( I don't know if i should uninstall NORTON. I installed it on my husband's laptop and that is not showing up on his computer. Ican't do a SYSTEM RESTORE because the calendar won't turn back to MARCH! What is up with that? :( Thank you for replying. :)

Norton messed up your System Restore. It is well known for doing this. It is possible that the computer was already infected and installing Norton (which installs low-level drivers) was the last straw. Try booting to Last Known Good Configuration. Do this by repeatedly tapping F8 as the computer is starting up. This will get you to the diagnostic menu where you can use your arrow key to select LKGC [press Enter]. If you can get into Windows, uninstall Norton and scan for malware. I don't recommend Norton (or McAfee). Instead, I prefer NOD32 (commercial) or Avast (free) for antivirus protection. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Thank you...i will try that now... should i first UNINSTALL NORTON? As i said it didn't mess up my husband's laptop.

I'm not sure I understand your question. If you can't get into Windows, how can you first uninstall Norton? If you can get into Windows then you don't need to use the LKGC option and yes, uninstall Norton. It doesn't matter if Norton didn't mess up your husband's computer; it messed up yours .MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Certainly it is possible that your computer is severely infected and that's why installing Norton caused the issue. I did mention this in my first reply to you. With that many infections I can't recommend anything except a clean install of Windows. Back up your data to external media first and then do a clean install/factory restore. http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html - Clean Install How-To http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Reinstalling_Windows - What you will need on-hand MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I don't know if my last reply went out...i just want to thank you for being so helpful. i have my restore CD's that i made when i purchased the machine, so i am good there. I assume i will have to re-install any programs that i purchased etc. I do have all my photos and important stuff on external drives already, so i am safe there. So thanks again for all your assistance. :)

You're very welcome. I'm glad to hear that you have your data already backed up. Yes, you will need to reinstall any of your own programs. Do a full destructive factory restore. And I don't recommend reinstalling Norton, but that's your choice of course. Cheers.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
