security changes causing vista to not allow networking and other operations to be started
Vista Ultimate 64bit SP1 on a home network and had been operational till now. Have not added any programs in last 30 day. Last Microsoft update was sp1 four days ago. I am running SpyBot and AVG and have been for over a year on this box with no problems. Logged in as administrator for trouble shooting below: System appeared fine for two days after sp1 update but then after booting up yesterday morning, found network services were not working with error dependency service or group failed to start and my firewall was turned off. When I tried to start the firewall I received an error security center cant turn on windows firewall. When I try starting manually, in services, I get error 1068. In reviewing my services that usually start automatically, I noticed that the following are not started and fail when attempting to start manually. Base filtering engine Dhcp client Diagnostic policy service Network list services Network location awareness Firewall Media player network sharing Time Tpm base services When I tried starting the Diag Policy Mgr I get an error 5 (access denied) and all other services fail with error 1068. In reviewing service logs: Application two event-id 1530 (registry file still open) Security -- appears clean System -- resource publication event 1002, time-server events 54,46 (access denied error 080070005), network awareness event 7024 (terminated with service-specific error 3221226008), network awareness event 7023 (access denied), distributedCOM event 10005 (dcom got error 1068) attempting to start service netprofm with arguments *** these keep getting repeated in the system logs I tried doing a restore from my older restore point but all four fail with event id 8203 (restore failed because of power or program error). I tried doing a repair from the Vista DVD but it does not find any problems. Ive researched google and technet and found some solutions that were close but didnt resolve or failed because of the access denied issue. Anyone hear of anything like this after loading SP1? It feels like something stepped all over security but cant find any method to unravel it and my last good registry backup is too old. Do I need to call MS and pay the 99.00 to review this? Thanks for reviewing and any suggestions would be grateful.

This is the same issue i am having with XP pro sp3. Looks like an issue in the security settings of the sp's. I get the MSConfig utility to say access denied, even as a administrator. I checked the settings within GPedit on the local machine, and found that the security was not correctly set. Once i changed this, i was able to act as an administrator again. I am not 100% up to date on vista, but this might be something you want to look into. I hope this helps, as it has kinda patched the issue i was having.

" Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 1 (SP1). This support for SP1 is valid until March 18, 2009. Availability of chat or e-mail support differs depending on your geographic location. For customers residing in North America or Canada, chat and e-mail support is available. Some issues may require more advanced support for which there is a charge. " I dont see where it says that machines on a domain means negated support. If it qualifies as a advanced support incident, you might be subject to a charge.

I had the same problem with several services on a laptop running Vista. Running "Startup Repair" from the recovery options of the Vista boot cd solved the problem! Chris.
