security center service will not start
Getting message secuity center/alet when I open the Security center it is off. When I attempt to start it I get this message "The security center service cant be started" Is there a fix for this problem?
August 17th, 2007 8:54pm

Hi Cybermac, I found the answer to your problem. First click on Start, then Run, type in "services.msc" without the quotes. When the page comes up, on the far rightscroll down the list and doubleclick on Security Center. Where it says Startup, set from Disabled to Automatic. Just below that you will see the word "Start". click on that and then click OK. Restart your computer and your Service Center will be active. Happy to help. NMK

I have Vista Home Premium I tried your fix which didn't work for me. Hoping you can help me too. When I did the above I got the following: Windows could not start the security cener service on local computer. Errror 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process. This issue only happened after I had some trojan powervideo.dll. i never had issues for 14 years on a computer until I switched to Vista. Sadly I was lost and couldn't understand how to fix my issues and changed many setting and ran many things to fix it. Thank you in advance.

I have the same problem since I McAffee prompted me that I had a trojan. The trick doesn't seem to work on Vista 32-bit.

Not 100% sure how I finally got it to work but, it is working: 1.I deleted AVG and SpyBot. 2. I ran Services.msc as administrator and did the following (note that it wasn't 100% logical as I just tried things and sadly didn't reboot after every one): a. Chose Remote Registry, clicked Log On tab and in the account text box, typed NT AUTHORITY\LocalService and deleted both passwords and hit apply (new passwords automatically filled in). I then rebooted. b. Did same as 2a but this time I did it to SecurityCenter Log On tab. Note that when i chose this I got an error message still that said "Configuration Manager: The specified device instance handle does not correspond to a present device." I hit OK and still changed the Log On. I then rebooted. c. I ran Services.msc as administrator 1 more time and started a number of things like Windows Installer and other things that were listed as not running. Yes I was just randomly starting things based on things that sounded like they may have some impact and all I did was hit start without changing how they run..... Well after starting a number that weren't on I was able to turn on Security Center. Don't know why at all. I did a reboot and it still worked. I still have the error message of 2b but at least it's working. If you have any idea what made this work or can actually get your to work please let me know as I was just desperately trying out things without intermittent checks. At least it's working. Good Luck.

I run WindowsXP Home Edition on a PC & Laptop. This solved my problem until i restarted my computers. Afterthey restarted I went back into security center &got this message The security center is currently unavailable because the security center service has not started or was stopped. Please close this window and restart the computer (or start the security center service) and then open the security center again.I wentback to the services list and security center was disabled again. soI used microsoft's malicious software removal tool and it didn't find any problems. NICE job. I was completely stuck in the same predicament, actually started messing around in Services before I read your post, Like you I have NO clue if those changes improved the outcome. However it was only after changing the settings on the Remote Registry AND the Security Center log-on page, that the Security Center was enabled, leading me to believe it had something to do more with the RR and SC log-on names than with the other Services. However, you had problems after the initial change and reboot, which is curious. I list below the Services I did change in the process.. I did not have to uninstall any anti-virus/spyware.Here's what I did in Services besides the above 2a and 2b:Starting a few options, and placing others on Automatic.Let's see... from these I changed the settings on Diagnostic System Host, Diagnostic Service Host, Internet Connection Sharing, Office Source Engine, and finally, Security Accounts Manager. Again, these services were either Stopped or Disabled, so I either Started them or turned them to Automatic. Thanks Mucho!

Exactly how and where did you check the relevant box on NAV2007? I have the same problem. Thanks!
February 6th, 2008 5:03am

I run XP Home Edition and have the same problem as Kev136. For over a year now, every time I boot my computer, the Security Center is disabled; I set it to start automatically and then start it, but next boot up and its disabled again. I have had no luck with finding anything online about this problem. I get the same message as above and start it in "services". I looked at Norton Antivirus - now have 2008 - and can't find any place to check/try your solution. Any other suggestions? Thanks

Open NAV2007. On the norton protection center window above basic pc security in the right hand corner click OPTIONS. On the Norton Protection Center Optionswindow select General Settings Under Windows Security Center alert settings check the box.Show messages from Windows Security Center. Click ok. Close NAV Then open Security Center it should be working as normal. Hope This was helpful Kev136

The only thing i can suggest is to check that pop-up blocker is switched on and try with the filter setting on high (blocks all pop-ups). pop-up blocker is located in Microsoft internet explorertools menu. Hope this was helpful.

Dear NMK The HP lap top hasVista Home Basic with McAfee and Registry Easy. Your procedure works to turn the Security Center on when all else fails but do you have any suggestions on whythe Security Center is changed to "Disabled" without manually making the change? Could there be a virus, spyware, trojan thatchanges the setting from "Automatic" to "Disable"? On the advice of the local PC repair shop they once changed the setting to "Automatic (Delayed)" but after a while it still changed to "Disabled". Thanks in advance for your time and assistance. Re:"Windows could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer.Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process."Ialso could not start Security Center from Services.msc menu, and was getting URLs hijacked from Google via clickchecktools.comI also could successfully complete a System Restore in Vista because of "unspecified error".Today - I resolved my issue. Below are the steps I took: Download Malware Remover:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/uninstall-antivirus-2009 Restart into Safe Mode (hit F8 continually when booting up) Run Malware Remover (it identifiedHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\kt_bho.KettleBho (Trojan.BHO)) Do a System Restore for a date before issues were identified This only worked in Safe Mode, as mentioned above there was an "unspecified error" when not in Safe Mode and it failed After which, no more URL hijacking and I was able to start Security Center Best of luck, hope this helps.
