I have experienced this unusual problem.  the search function kicks in without my invoking it. it happens on the main screen (window search function) and as well inside different applications (gmail, IE .... etc). what can I do to solve it?

Can you check the same in safe mode ?

According to your description, this problem mostly caused by 3rd app, please check if you have made any change to your system before this problem occurs?
