search charm loads 100% CPU

Search charm used to be efficient in 8. Now on 8.1 preview, with default 'everywhere', it almost brings down the system:

System is unresponsive to keys, mouse movements become slow and jittery. Taskmgr shows 100% CPU with Windows Explorer sucking up almost 90%. Have to restart Windows Explorer to go back to normal (maybe once search has concluded it would also do so, but I'm not willing to wait beyond a min. or so).

System is an older Sony VGN-Z with 6G of RAM and a 512G SSD - has always been plenty fast in W7 and 8, and performing well in 8.1 with the exception of search.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

Seems like the all-in-one W7 Searchcomplainers were requesting?  Too much being considered than what is being looked forfor me.  In W7 I turned off everything except what we were getting in W8- Apps and Settings. Now it looks like I am going to have to find a way to do that again.Until then I will be doing explicit Win-WandWin-Q searches.Gad.  Even that won't help?(Win-Q says Everything and there is nothing in its dropdown list which is as explicit as I would like to get back the previous functionality.)SearchSettings just allow me to turn off BING.  I'm pretty sure I don't want to start an Internet search (e.g. using BING) from the Search charm.I don't even want to do a file search from there because there is no AQS allowed... OMG.  There is!?  Who knew? That might change my opinion and expectations of this new search. Thanks for making me find this!

Install the WPT (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4847.install-the-windows-performance-toolkit-wpt.aspx), open a cmd prompt with admin rights and run this command for 60s:

xperf -on latency -stackwalk profile -buffersize 1024 -MaxFile 256 -FileMode Circular && timeout -1 && xperf -d cpuusage.etl

press a key to stop logging. Zip and upload the file to your skydrive and post a link here.

Your problem is like mine. While I begin to type anything in start menu, CPU load rises very fast, to 100%, mouse slow..

It seems that it's also not as good as the one on Windows 8. Also, the search from Start screen was a great feature. I don't know why they turned it to charm search only.

Hi,

Please be ensured that you have installed the latest drivers and all the updates. In addition, you can try to boot into clean boot mode to see how it works.

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista
