Hi

You can still use the old ssmypics.scr (My Pictures Slideshow) screen saver in Windows 8.

If you have access to an XP system, you can copy the ssmypics.scr screen saver file from the Windows\System32 folder and move the file to your Windows 8 system. Place it in the same folder (If you are using the 64bit version of Windows 8, place the file in the Windows\SysWOW64 folder).

If you do not have access to the file, you can download a copy from the following link.

ssmypics.scr

Download the file to your Desktop.

Right Click the file and select Properties.

Click the Unblock button.

If you wish, run a scan on the file with your antivirus software.

Move the file to the proper folder.

You can now go to Personalize/Screen Saver. The screen saver will show up as My Pictures Slideshow. Select the Settings button in the screen saver to see the options.

Hi and thank you for posting this.

I also would like to add, when discussing to configure the screensaver.

The old ssmypics.scr is limited to show pictures from 200 directories. If you, like me use the screensaver to show your photo album, that is not enough. You will only browse through your oldest or newest pictures depending on your sort method in those dirctories.

You can fix this by changing the registry settings for the screen saver.

Please use regedit to set this key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Screen Saver.Slideshow]
"MaxDirectories"=dword:00000300

Or any value of your choice. 768 happens to suit me.
