retrieve Homegroup name in Win 7?
Hi, I have a strange issue. I have a desktop with Win 7 Pro and a laptop with Win XP Pro. I just reformatted the HD in my laptop, try to connect them together (it was working before... more or less). I had set a Home network but I can't remember the name (can be firstnameHome or Homefirstname). In Win XP it was very easy: go to My Network Places, Homegroup and it appears, I can't get it in Win 7. I know they must have the same name. I am asked if I want to change pass, settings etc... but never gives me this name. I need to share my printer and scanner (among other things like documents...). Can anyone help me, please? It is a hell of a headache to set up a network. I already did it, I should be able to do it again, although I did it only once with Win 7. I thank you very much

Hi, Would you please let me know what is your operating system on the laptop? Regarding to the following article, Windows XP doesn't include HomeGroup function. You need to use file sharing method. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee449408(WS.10).aspx If you want to know the workgroup name to share file with Windows 7, on Windows 7, you can click Start, type sysdm.cpl in the search box to access System Properties. On computer name tab, you can change the Workgroup name. Please make sure these computers are in the same network such as IP address. Best Regards, NikiPlease remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Great, but shame on me, I should have known :(. One step anyway, thanks a million times. So, I retrieved it, and set it in the laptop (Win XP, SP3), a stupid Toshiba that decides for me what to do.... I have all computers in both of them (they appear), but when in laptop, the desktop (Win7) doesn't show my personal docs. I have B\users\Public.... I should have "users\Personal". I know it is not possible to have this betwork working perfectly with 2 different versions of Win, but it is a pain. I have shared everything. Actually, it shows a lot of things (including my Outlook files), but not My Documents. I also need to import all my bookmarks, history etc... in FF. I will have to contact them.
