renaming or deleting a phantom or ghost drive
I have not installed a new program or device in quite some time but all of a sudden a ghost CD drive showed up under my computer. It has no hardware corresponding to it and is labeled CD Drive (E:) and containes 0 out of 0 bytes. ( Type: CD Drive and File System: Unknown under properties) Normally I could just ignore this however I had 4 external hard drives already installed and when this was created it changed the letters of all of them (so Drive (E:) is now Drive (F:) and so on) and this messes with all of my links throughout my computer. In particular itunes which has all my songs in an external hard drive folder and it can't find any of them because of the drive letter change. I have tried device manager and it does not display (even after inputting the instruction to show hidden devices in command prompt) It also does not show up under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ MountedDevices either. System Restore up to a week before this problem occurred does not fix it and lastly I have tried renaming the drives under disk management however the phantom CD Drive E does not display here for me to delete and I cannot rename the Drive that I want as E as it does not appear as an option in the drop down list. At this point I am completely out of ideas so any help and getting rid of or deleting this thing would be a HUGE help. Thank you.1 person needs an answerI do too

HiPhantom devices can appear for any number of reasons. Perhaps the most common reason is a shutdown error with a removable drive. Most people don't know this, but there are actually three different ways to disconnect a removable drive.
