Some USB thumb drives have a "read only" permantly set on them by the manufacture. I was at an event, and a sales person was tossing out little 512mb flash drives with the company logo on them and product lit on the drive, always in the market for some cheap storage I was happy to get it. When I got home I found it was fixed to read only. So i cut the thing apart down to the board, and fixed in some sort of resin was the swich fused to read only. (of corse it was toast by the time the saw finished with it.) My advise is to watch the sales flyers for the nearest mega electronics store, or watch some of the big online vendors, the last one I bought was a 16GB for $20 on sale, works great.-- :P Advice offered, If you need more help it is advised to seek the council and advice of paid professionals. The answer is always 42, or reboot.

It could be broken, sometimes the controller for the flash drive loses contact with the memory - effectively, it's dead and Windows reads it as a different drive to the one that it should. Contact your supplier or the manufacturer for a replacement.
