remote management of Windows Vista services
Dear users,I have the following question: I have a Vista computer with default settings and an administrator user and pass for it. I tried to add the services snap in in mmc (as managing a remote computer), but because of the default settings of Windows Firefall it can't be done. Is there any other way I could manage the services remotely? With these default settings?Thank youa lot,ChrisKrisztian M.

Hi Chris, Thank you for your post. Based on my research, I think we need to enable the Remote Administration rule of the Windows Firewall on the remote computer. You can use either the Group Policy editor (Gpedit.msc) or a script to enable the Windows Firewall: Allow inbound remote administration exception, or use a netsh firewall command at the command prompt to allow for remote administration on the remote computer. 1. The following command enables this feature: netsh firewall set service RemoteAdmin enable 2. We can also use the following steps in the Group Policy editor (Gpedit.msc) to enable "Allow inbound Remote Administration" on the remote computer. 1) Open the Group Policy Object Editor snap-in by clicking the "Start" menu, typing "gpedit.msc" in the Search Bar and Press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2) Open Computer Configuration, open Administrative Templates, open Network, open Network Connections, open Windows Firewall, and then open either Domain Profile or Standard Profile, depending on which profile you want to configure. 3) In the details pane, double-click Windows Firewall: Allow inbound remote administration exception. 4) In the Windows Firewall: Allow remote administration exception properties dialog box, on the Settings tab, click Enabled. Dear Nicholas, Thank you for your answer. I have successfully connected to the other computer withmy mmc "services" snap in, but unfortunately I get an access denied message. There is no option to set the user and password so I tried to create a user with the same username and password as on the remote computer, but this also doesn't work :S The two computers are standalone PC-s. Any idea? ChrisKrisztian M.

Hi, Thank you for your update. May I know if the computers are in a domain environment? Please go to the "Network and Sharing Center" on both of the computers and check if you have enabled all the sharing. You can also try the runas command to run the mmc with the remote computers account: Example: In command prompt withAdministrator permissions(cmd.exe): runas /user:<username> <password> "C\windows\mmc.exe" Using the runas command with MMC http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc782756.aspx Regarding the Access is denied error, please let me know which operation you were acting when it appears, and help us capture a screenshot. Capture a screenshot ============== 1) Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard. 2) Click the "Start" menu, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter. 3) In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save". 4) The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot". 5) Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click Desktop on the left pane and then click "Save". Please use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and share its URL with me. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT
