Most likely she has windows 8, not pro or enterprise. Windows 8 does not accept incoming Remote Desktop, only Pro and Enterprise editions have the server portion.
If she wants this feature, she would need to purchase a license for the Pro version.

I have a friend that I was trying to help by connecting remotely. She has windows 8. When we go to the system properties on her computer under the remote tab all that is showing is the check box that says allow remote assistance connections to this computer. Under the advanced tab it is blank and section that normally says remote desktop and is where the selections to allow or not allow are not displayed. Does she need to download an update or anything or is there a setting under the command prompt that will fix that?
Scott is correct. You could however use a third party remote desktop that is free easier to use and bullet proof called team viewer
