You have purchased a second hand laptop? What make and model? What disks came with the laptop?Have you tried booting into safe mode and selecting the Administrator? It may have a blank password. If it is password protected the simplest way forward might be to ask whoever sold it to you for the password!Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

An Acer Aspire 3690 was sold with eRecovery which means that there should be a recovery partition containing an original copy of the operating system at the time of the original purchase. The operative word being "should" as we have no idea whether the person who sold it to you has deleted or modified the contents of the partition.Restoring to factory defaults is non-reversible!This page from the Acer web site gives information about eRecovery and a downloadable manual. http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_3690.htmlHope this helps, Gerry Cornell
