programmes not recognising that i am connected to the internet
My laptop does not recognise that i am connected to the internet when trying to install and update. when i try to use the online help it says it is unavailable and to check my internet connection but i am connected to the internet, it also does this when
trying to update and install software. can anyone help me?

These applications may be honoring Internet Explorer's offline setting. Try this:
1 - Open Internet Explorer
2 - Tap the Alt key on your keyboard, then press F to display the File menu.
3 - Make sure "Work Offline" is not enabled

Are you able to reach websites like www.bing.com from that computer? If so, here's something to check:
1 - Click your network icon near the clock (it may look like a computer with a network cable next to it, or it may be a wireless symbol, depending on how you're connected).
2 - Choose Network and Sharing Center
3 - Make sure you're not set as "public network". If it is, click it and set it to a home network.
When set as a Public Network, some features are blocked for extra security, and it can block other programs from using the internet.

live
cd and
see
if you can browse

to ping the

Thank you again but it is set to home network. molpiiii what do you mean about the network cable? i use an internet dongle when im at home and a wireless connection when im at university but it is the same on both

I am assuming you can actually reach webpages from your browser?
What he means by a network cable is a physical cable which you will most likely find plugged into the back of a wireless router at one of your friends houses. If you are able to, plug this into your laptop (it will only fit into the right 'hole'), and see
if you still have the same problems.
It's possible that you are having conflicts with your wireless dongle, what make are you using? It might be worthwhile uninstalling the drivers for your dongle, restart and try the wireless at Uni. But again, at uni they may well have restrictions on downloads
from their network, as molpiiiii stated. If no joy, the re-installation of your dongle drivers may fix your issue anyway.
A few options to give a go, keep us updates with how its going.

In Network Properties check for "View you basic network information and set up connections"
if you are connected to internet. if yes then you try for office/online check button in internet explorer if not you have to check with dns and other service provider settings Amolkumar Supe

Hi thanks for everyones help but nothing is working. i am having this problem if i'm using my internet dongle, the wireless at uni and the wireless at my sisters house. i know that the wireless does not have any restrictions on it so that won't be the reason.
do you think its just a fault with my laptop? ive had it for about 5 months now and its never worked that i can remember.

If Windows 7 came pre-installed on the laptop from the manufacturer and it still didn't work, I would urge you to contact them before any possible warranty period expires. Especially if all of these suggestions on this site have not helped.

Hi,
Narrow it down to see if you have a routing problem or a DNS problem:
Make sure you are connected to wire, wireless, etc. Go to start and type CMD
at the prompt type:
ping www.falconits.com
do you get reply or timeout?
next type:
ping 8.8.8.8
Do you get a reply or timeout?
Next, type IPCONFIG /ALL
Post the results of the following:
What is your IP address?
What is your default gateway?
What is your DNS Server?
Lastly, go to control panel, Internet options.In the connections tab, lan settings, make sure there is no checkmark in use proxy settings.

Hi Miguel i did the start CMD thing, i didnt get a reply for the first thing but got a reply on the ping 8.8.8.8. i then did the ipconfig/all bit and lots of writing came up, i'm confused about where to post my ip address etc because the rest of it
has not worked.

Hi Laura,
It sounds like you have a name resolution problem (DNS). You can ping an ip address (like 8.8.8.8) but not a domain name like
www.google.com.
Write down the following information when you do an IPCONFIG /ALL and create another post with the information that comes up on the screen. What I am interested in knowing is:
IP Address
Default Wateway
DNS ServerMiguel Fra /

If you have a router, your IP address will be an internal one, which is only usable by you, within your own network. We are really just concerned with knowing that you are getting an IP address. I'd say the most important thing is to let us know
your DNS Server, if it lists one. A DNS server is not something we can trace back to you or your computer: it's like the phone book of the internet. A DNS server, operated by your provider or someone else like Google or other companies, is how
it translates "www.microsoft.com" into the IP address it really needs to contact that site.
If you're not showing a DNS Server when you run "ipconfig", that's the source of your issue. We can help resolve it, but before getting into that, would you post back that you are/aren't getting a DNS server when you run that command?

hi yes it does show a dns server the number is 192.168.1.254 it comes up under the heading wireless lan adapter wireless network connection, is that any help?
