program switching issue

have come across a small bug that is causing me some grief, starting from yesterday

i can no longer alt+tab between programs or applications,

i can not close an application by dragging from top down,

the windows icon on desktop for 8.1pro flickers with mouse over and will not switch back to metro screen unless you move the mouse to the very bottom left (as you did before 8.1)

can not go back pages on browsers (firefox and IE)

all updates checked and no new ones to do, checked malware/rootkits etc, refreshed 8.1 but same issue continues.

if i am in an application i need to Win key+e to get explorer up so i can access desktop, can only get back to start screen through full reset for a few minutes before program switching dies

administrative events show multiple errors (all the same event)

The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: G:, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume3.

no g: on system, system only has primary c: and a data drive d:

any advice as to why this may be happening or a resolution would be appreciated.

May I know your laptop model and Windows version that you are using?

Do you remember if there is any changes before this issue happen (install, reinstall, update)

try to run System File Checker (sfc) to find is there any registry error

maybe this issue caused by 3rd party application, I suggest do clean boot and monitor this issue

Hi,

Clean boot mode isnot a clean reinstall.

As britishdhez mentioned above,we can try clean boot to see whether it is related to software conflicts

For detail steps, please see:

How to perform a clean boot in Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us

If the issue persists, please use a  new account to test it.

a further note which may/may not relate, data transfer to an external hdd dropped out (multiple times), had to restart the transfer, could i be missing that this is a ram issue? i have run memtest and no faults showed up, but is it 100%?

edit, sfc did not bring back any problems with registry

  1. To enable that option
Open Start Screen under Settings by pressing Windows + W keys
    Type Allow
Click Allow switching between recent apps
    Ensure the option is ON
  2. You can also try to refresh your PC
Point to the upper corner of your screen and hover down to choose Settings
    Click Change PC settings
    Go to Update and recovery
    Choose Recovery
Locate Refresh your PC without affecting your files and click Get started
    Follow on-screen instructions

thanks, but have already covered all that.

problem still persists, can not alt+tab, can not click on items on the task bar, can not go back pages on multiple browsers, can not click on windows logo for start screen (please see previous posts for further fault details)

no hardware or software changes prior to the problem beginning.

update: have had the system stable for approx 2 hours, able to swap programs normally and alt+tab, close programs etc,

has just now gone back to previous issues, no warnings or errors listed under comp management (8:20pm AEST)

backup your registry first and try to go to this registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

if you find AltTabSetting with value 1, try to delete it, maybe this issue caused by registry and restart your PC
