poor network performance w/Vista Ultimate - software related?
I've been experiencing poor network-related performance ever since making the move to Vista Ultimate (albeit with a new system) - anything from internet to network file transfers (if security settings will allow!). I also have a laptop that can perform brilliantly via. WLAN, however experiences similar performance issue when LANning (Vista Home Premium), so I've focussed on the following areas to solve: *hardware - router, LAN cable/card*software - vista I've tried a different router port (Dynalink RTA1025W), different LAN cable and card (both cards using Realtek chipsets), however have not had significant luck (will admit slightly better performance). Software-wise, I'm not using firewall, and I've disabled TCP auto-tuning and Remote Differential Compression (I've also booted into safe mode w/ networking and did not notice any improvement, hence not concerned with 3rd party apps). I just can't figure out why I'm downloading close to 8Mb via WLAN, whereas LAN can barely do 1Mb...I do appreciate any further trouble-shooting suggestions, cheers

Hi, This kind of issues can be caused by the installed anti-virus. I suggest that you temporary uninstall the anti-virus, and then check if the performance is improved. If the issue persists, I suggest that you boot in Clean Boot Mode, and check if the issue occurs. Clean boot ================= Lets disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps: 1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment, if the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue. For more information about this step, please refer to the following KB article: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com//kb/929135 However, if the issue persists in Clean Boot Mode, please let me know if only the file download/transfer speed is slow, or both download/transfer speed and the speed of accessing websites are slow. I suggest that you install Windows Vista SP1 to apply related hotfix patches regarding file download/copy speed. Information about Windows Vista Service Pack 1 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936330/en-us Hope it helps.

thnx 4 ur reply, Arthur. You'll notice I've updated my first post to reflect results - am using SP1, booted into safe mode and found performance to be similar. So, not considering 3rd party apps, it could be either: *driver *vista - some other setting unique to my desktop (since laptop is fine) *router - some LAN setting (am investigating with manufacturer) - note, laptop works fine when connected to same router port using same cable. Any other Win suggestions? Apperciate it

Hi, In the first post you have indicated that the laptop works fine with WLAN but encounters similar issue when connecting wired. I just would like to confirm the current situation regarding the laptop. (You said "laptop is fine" in your last post). Since the issue persists in Safe Mode, and the system is already up-to-date, we may do nothing to resolve the issue on system side except upgrading the driver for the network adapter. I suggest that you download the latest driver from the computer manufacturer's website. If the desktop was built by yourself, please download the latest driver from Realtek website. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=7&PFid=7&Level=2&Conn=1 Important Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information. If it is possible, change the network adapter with other models rather than Realtek. If the issue persists, try to obtain a fine cable and replace your cable, then check if the performance is better. Regarding adjusting router settings, please check the router instruction and find if there is any LAN related settings. You may also contact the support of the router manufacturer for assistance.
