ping error 1231
Old subject i know but i am trying to find out if there has been any definitive cure to this problem. I spent several days recently trying every suggestion on countless numbers of forums but with no success.I resorted to formatting the hard drive and reinstalling vista. The wireless connection worked perfectly until i installed vista sp1 and the problem re-occurred. Aother format/reinstalation and same result when instaling sp1. Tried this several times but am now running my laptop without updates from sp1 onwards. Works perfectly.I have therefore concluded that sp1 is causing the problem. Any opinions on this will be gratefully accepted. Has Microsoft identified any problem with the patch and fixed it making it safe to update my computer again or am i missing something. I am happy with the way my computer is running but i need to stop the update notification by updating or Is there a way to stop the notification annoying the ____ out of me.

Why dont you try "netsh int ip reset iplog.txt" in an elevated command prompt where iplog.txt is the log file name...and see if you get any further error messages....if you get none try rebooting the machine and then try pinging....if you still get the same problem please do post back here...and before that also try "netsh winsock reset" and then reboot and try...Regards, KOWSHAL H.M. a.k.a W@R10CK

Hi, Thank you for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum. First of all, may I ask some questions: 1. How did you install Windows Vista SP1, through Windows Update or manually downloading and installing Windows Vista SP1? 2. Do you receive any error message during installation? 3. Do you update your device drivers such as the wireless card driver after installing Windows Vista SP1? Based on the current situation, I would like to propose the following suggestions. 1. Create a restore point to your external drive. 2. Install Windows Vista SP1 by visiting the following website. Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) frequently asked questions http://support.microsoft.com/kb/959064 Note: the above link includes vast answers to Windows Vista SP1 related issues, you should be patient to check them while occurring with problems. 3. Install the latest Windows Vista SP1 compatible device drivers, you can contact your computer manufacturer to obtain these. If the issue persists, you still receive this ping error code 1231. Lets focus on network troubleshooting. 4. Try to reset TCP/IP , Windows Firewall and Windows Socket. 1) Open a command prompt as Administrator by clicking on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> right-click on Command Prompt -> choose "Run as administrator" 2) Make sure you are in the root directory by typing cd\ and hitting enter at the command prompt (gets you to c:\ prompt) 3) Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each command: a) netsh int ip reset reset.txt b) netsh winsock reset c) netsh firewall reset 4) Restart the computer and ping again to see if the problem is resolved. Meanwhile, if you don't want to update to Windows Vista SP1 and the issue persists. You can also restore your computer to the previous restore point created in step 1 then change Windows Update settings to hide Windows Updates. System Restore ============== 1) Please click on Start and choose All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Windows Backup. 2) Click Restore on the left pane. 3) Choose Basic Restore. 4) Follow the wizard and click Next. 5) If you would like to restore everything in the backup, we can check the box Restore everything in this backup on the top of the window. 6) We can also browse and choose certain files and folders to restore. Then, click Next. 7) Then choose the folder to save the recovered files and click Next. 8) When we see a Restore is complete! message, click Finish. Sorry maybe i was a bit too longwinded. As said i have tried all remedies suggested by many many sites and forums and no longer wish to or need to fix problem.I take your point Dale Qiao about using system restore but when the problem originally occured SR did not help. Only success has been format/reinstall but updates mess that up too. I havent the want or time to go through all the hassle if SR doesn't work againBasically I want to know if microsoft has recognised and fixed the problem with the update if not i will wait till they have. Or can i disable (properly) the update notification. When i switch off update notification i get notifications constantly telling me my computer is not fully protected. I am happy to run without updating if i can turn this fearture FULLY off. Thanks for replies

Hi, Thanks for your update. Since this issue is related to the wireless connection and only occurs in Windows Vista SP1, I may need to suggest that you check if the wireless card driver is up to dated again. A new compatible version of driver may include a solution to this problem. Moreover, you can upgrade your Operating System to Windows Vista SP2 right after installing Windows Vista SP1, Windows Vista SP2 has enhanced some features such as hardware standards in Windows Vista SP1. Meanwhile, you can try to wired connect network with LAN to see if it works. If it works, this issue is narrow down to the wireless problem. Otherwise, if it doesn't work, please run ipconfig /all to list network configurations and post the information in this thread. We'll focus on this issue and perform a further investigation. Hope this helps. Thanks.

Updated right through to sp2 and problem hasn't re-occured. Thought i might have aproblem with getting sp2 being as sp1 causes the connectivity problem but no. Perhaps MS fixed the problem with sp1?Thanks again for your help
