outlook express compact files message
Once my machine has booted up I get the outlook express compact files pop up message. I do not and have never used outlook express for email, so why does OE issue this message. I have tried to remove OE completely from my machine, but all attempts to delete or rename files result in either a "file in use" message, or in the case of a rename attempt, the system creates a new copy. Full AV scans of the machine do not identify any trojan or malware problems and all security patches are applied. Can anyone advise how to stop this message occurring please?Chrs Bert1 person needs an answerI do too

You have to go into its settings and disable indexing OE. steve "bert ronce" wrote in message news:7d679e06-0b47-4ef2-955a-6613b8b00841...yes bruce. Windows search 4.0 is in the list of installed programs

What Steve said.In Windows Search, you have to tell it to stop indexing OE.Windows Search. Set Desktop Search Options: http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/desktopsearch/search/options.mspxIn the Windows Control Panel | Indexing Options | Modify. Clear the check box for Outlook Express.Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]

thanks guys. I have now done this but unfortunately, the message is still issued after each reboot. The only indexing locations are now documents and settings folder and internet explorer history. Any plan B's please? Kind RegardsBert

You did let it compact once, correct? If you did, here is the whole list of possibilities.<canned>The problem is with the registry counter that gives you the prompt after 100 closings of OE. It is being increased quicker than it should be and even if you are not using OE.There is a growing number of programs and actions that may be causing this after installing SP3. Do you have any of the following?IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLLWindows {Desktop} SearchMailwasherNero plug-in(s)Opening EML files while OE is closed will also contribute to the registry count.Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party firewalls, especially if they were running when you installed SP3.Archived thread discussing this issue in June 2008:http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general/browse_frm/thread/fcd35fbfa457fd6fIn the case of Windows Search, (the #1 offender), you have to tell it to stop indexing OE.Windows Search. Set Desktop Search Options: http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/desktopsearch/search/options.mspxIn the Windows Control Panel | Indexing Options | Modify. Clear the check box for Outlook Express. In the case of Nero Scout, see Item 2.3 on page 8 here.ftp://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero8/scout/NeroScout_Enu.pdfIn the option to exclude selected file types from indexing, be sure to add these file types:.eml, .dbx & .nwsBruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]

Top Man!!! I re-verifiedthe indexing - no probs there. Nero was not in my list of progs in control panel, but a search identified NERO7 dirs/files in program files and other places. As I do not use NERO, I manually deleted all of these items then run a McAfee cleanup (including registry clean). Then I rebooted and got no OE message. Many thanks for the advice and your persistance dude - v grateful. Kind RegardsBert
