one vista machine on my network cannot connect to shares on other vista machines, but they can all connect back to it
I have 3 Vista machines on my network, all running ultimate sp1, all on the same switch and subnet, same workgroup, same local administrator passwords, same local user name that is a local administrator (same passwords). All 3 machines have Network Discovery, File Sharing, public Folder Sharing, and Media Sharing on, and Printer Sharing and Password Protected Sharing off.I have one machine that cannot connect to any of the shares on the other two machines (we will call that machine1). machine2 and machine3 can each connect to shares on machines 1-3 just fine. I have tried turning off all the firewalls, enabling and disabling security settings via gpedit.msc (computer config\windows settings\security settings\local policies\security options), and manuallyadding user:password keys via "control keymgr.dll"to no avail. On machine1, I can open up a command prompt and connect to a share using "net usem: \\machine2\music", and can then "dir" that directory and see it just fine, butI cannot create a shortcut to that mapped drive, or see it in My Computer or explorer. From machine1, I can remote desktop into machine2 and machine3 fine, and I can ping both of them too.Another oddity is that on machine1, if I open up Network, I can see all the other machines on the network (including itself, machine1). If i double-click machine1, I get the same error as I do clicking on the remote machines (\\MACHINE1 is not accessible. You may not have permission to access this network resource). Why would I not even be able to open shares on my own computer? This has been baffling me for over a year, andI finally decided to reach out for some help! Can anyone suggest a fix for this?

Hi, Thank you for your post. Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Try to access the share with the type of \\computer name\folder on all the computers and see how it works. 2. Check the security settings : 1) Ensure you log on all the computers with the Administrator account. 2) Check both Sharing and Security settings on all of the computers shares properties, and make sure that you have assigned the Full-Control permissions to Everyone. 3. Ensure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all the computers: 1)Go to Control Panel - Network Connections. 2)Right-Click on the connection and click Properties. 3)Find Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4 in the list. 4)Click Properties, and then click Advanced. 5)On the Advanced TCP/IP settings windows, go to WINS tab. 6)Under NetBIOS setting, click Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and then click OK. 4. Reset the security settings on the problematic computer with the following steps: Note: Please perform a full system backup first. 1) Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER. 2) Type the following command, and then press ENTER: secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose You receive a "Task is completed" message, and a warning message that something could not be done. You can safely ignore this message. For more information about this message, view the %windir%\Security\Logs\Scesrv.log file. Note: In Windows Vista, the defltbase.inf file is a Security configuration template for the default security. You can view the settings for this file in the following location: %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf For more information, please refer to the following Knowledge Base: How to reset security settings back to the defaults http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;313222 Hope this helps.
