oddness with folder redirection and game installation
alright, i know this isn't exactly mission critical, but it's perplexing nonetheless, and i pay for my Technet subscription, so why not. hopefully, this is in the right place, and doesn't belong in "file services and storage." when you're using folder redirection for "my documents" certain games have an issue with permissions when it comes to creating files and folders in the redirected "my documents." the culprit this time, Dawn of War II: Retribution. when you first run the game, it tries to create certain folders and files under "my documents\my games"... unfortunately, it's not successful and as a result, it crashes. i've had an ongoing discussion with someone from Relic and they're sure the culprit lies with folder redirection. i've even looked at junctions as a way to solve this, but as i later found out: "Note that Windows does not support junctions to directories on remote shares." i could probably disable folder redirection for "my documents", run the game, have it create the directories/files, and then reinstate folder redirection, but i really rather not do it this way. there are many other systems that this GPO change will impact. does anyone know how else i can solve this problem?

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum. First, I would like to know whether this issue occurs to all games or programs which would create files in My document folder. Have you tried to install games via “Run as administrator”? Please check if there is any information in Event Viewer about this crash. Meanwhile, try to use process monitor to see what the failed process was. Troubleshooting with Process Monitor Alex Zhao TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. thank you for your response. the game's installed through steam. there's not really a "run as administrator" per se. i can try running steam as the administrator, but i'd assume it has the appropriate rights to install the application anyways; please correct me if i'm wrong. the application files themselves do not have any problems. they're in their appropriate locations, and i've had no other problems with steam applications. it's the folders/files that are created in the redirected folders that have the issues when you first run the game. i guess the application creates or tries to create the files and folders in the redirects when it's first run. as for other games, i haven't had any issues. interestingly enough some games install their profiles and other data under "my documents" and others install them in a folder under "my documents" called "my games." for some reason, none use the "saved games" folder in the user library. as for event viewer, i don't get anything in there about the crash. process monitor? do you mean what's under the task manager, or something else? btw, i just tried running steam as administrator, and i still have the crashing issue.

Hi, Download process monitor from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645 and run it. Then try to repro the issue with the game and then stop and save the procmon file as .PML and let us know where we can access it. If you wish to send it to us directly, then let us know and we will give instructions on how you can send it to us directly. Thanks AJAYPS
