ntoskrnl.exe (system) in clogs up 90% of disk usage

This application, ntoskrnl.exe, is slowing down my computer. I've noticed some sluggish performance from my laptop, and when I decided to pay a visit to task manager, I found that ntoskrnl.exe, or system (as it's referred to) is literally taking up about 50% to 90% of my disk column. I don't know for sure if this is the reason that my computer is so sluggish, but that huge percentage makes me extremely suspicious. It would be greatly appreciated if someone can provide a solution as to why this is, and how to reduce it (if it'll make a difference). If you need my laptop's hardware/software details, don't be shy to ask.

EDIT: I have windows 8.1, sorry for not mentioning that
