noob networking issue
Hello, I am new to networking and am in a pinch / new living situation where i have to rely on networking 3 machines together. I managed to hook up a wireless router to a motorola surf board (sbv5222) and connect my xbox and laptop to the main computer in the house. The main computer is running on windows vista andas mentioned connected to my xbox360 and a dell laptop running on windows xp. Everything worked fine once i set it all up and a few days later the connection dropped. I have to turn off the main computer which has a direct internet connection. unplug the modem followed by the router then plug everything back in and turn on the computer. when the main computer works all of the remaining computers / consoles work. in several hours the connection will drop and i have to do it all over again. I can understand the laptop and xbox not working but why does the main computer which has a direct connection have trouble as well. I do recieve a message from the xbox that says i need to identify the dns settings manualy to resolve the problem but i have no idea what that even means... please help!

It may be because your main computer isn't configured properly with the router and/or the router isn't configured properly for your ISP. You have a fairly simple network and with the router in place you don't need ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) any more, the devices should connect directly to the router itself. For a setup like yours it should be like this: Cable Modem->Router's WAN port Wired Devices (computers/Xbox, etc.)->Router's LAN ports Wireless devices->well, wirelessly... Your router should be set to get its WAN address, WAN gateway and WAN DNS from your ISP via the Cable Modem (consult your Router's manual and you may have to call your ISP to register the router's WAN MAC address with their service). All of the other devices, wired and wireless should be set to get their information from the router. For devices that use DHCP this is automatic; for devices that have a static address you should put in the router's address for both the gateway and DNS provider.
