Adaware is not an antivirus. What was the previous antivirus program that was installed and was it uninstalled prior to the attempt to install AVG ? There's a tool that can be run that removes the remnants of almost all antivirus programs that you can obtain here: AppRemover Suggest you run that and remove the previous antivirus, if any, and AVG from the list that you will see. Next, using Internet Explorer, have the system scanned by the Live OneCare Safety Scanner If the system can not be scanned there then download, save , install, update, and then scan with Malwarebytes anti-malware . Click the Download - free version button. Here's a Tutorial for using it . Once the previous AV has been removed and none of the scanners detect any malware present on the system, you can install either Microsoft Security Essentials or another free AV. Avast and Antivir are both quality AVs and offer free editions of them.MowGreen Update Services - Consumer Security

Hello it's j62, thankyou for replying, I've downloaded AVG removal tool, then I downloaded Malwarebytes virus program, at the moment it's scanning my lap top, but Windows is still not recognizing the virus program I have installed, You mentioned 'live onecare safety scanner' can you please let me know if this scanner is free, as when I looked at terms and conditions it mentioned money and accounts, and I ccan't afford to pay, I look forward to your reply, j62

Unless your system is being redirected to a fake OneCare Scanner page, it will scan your system for free . Microsoft Security Essentials does work with Windows XP 32 bit. If you click the Download button a window appears that offers a choice of Language and a choice of editions of Windows, XP 32 bit being the first. I fail to see where you get the impression that it is not. Please answer these 3 questions: 1) Which antivirus program did you install that is not being recognized by Security Center ? 2) Did Malwarebytes anti-malware detect anything on your system ? 3) Is English your native language ? If not, what is it, please ?MowGreen Update Services - Consumer Security

Please read this to see what the free and paid Versions do. Also, please see How to Disable Antivirus Alerts When Security Center Does Not Detect Installed Antivirus Application . Make sure that the alert has not been previously Disabled so that we're not running around in circles here. Once your certain that the alert has not been Disabled, please install Microsoft Security Essentials and then restart the system. Does it recognize that MSE is installed now ? If not, then there's an issue with Windows Mangagement Instrumentation ( WMI ). Please see this: Repairing and re-registering the WMI . Follow the instructions for using Microsoft's WMI diagnosis utility . Using that tool will let you know if there is an issue with WMI or not. If there is an issue with WMI, then follow the instructions for Windows XP Service Pack 2, even if SP3 is installed.MowGreen Update Services - Consumer Security
