no logon servers available to service the logon request
Hey all, I set up a Virtual PC image on my home network to be a DNS server and Domain Controller - tothsolutions.local - using Windows Server 2003 R2. This seemed to work OK because I was able to add other computers in my home network to the tothsolutions.local domain (after switching their Preferred DNS servers to the internal ip of my DNS/DC server.) However, if I logout of my Windows account and try to login as a domain user, it gives me the error message: "no logon servers available to service the logon request" I can ping the internal ip of the DNS/DC server from the other computers so I'm not sure what else I need to do. Is there some setting in Active Directory to enable logon requests? I tried disabling my firewall but that didn't help. The computer that is I'm trying to logon to the domain from is using Windows 7 Pro x64. Thanks, Justin

You find a logon server through DNS. Does the Win 7 machine have your DC configured as its DNS server? Is it in the same network as the DC? What do you get if you do nslookup tothsolutions.local from this workstation? Bill

Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Log on the Windows 7 client with the local administrator account, ensure the computer can communicate with the server (such as using the “ping” command) with no issues and then disjoin and rejoin the computer to domain to check the issue. 2. Temporarily remove all the security software (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.) on the Windows Vista client and check if it works. 3. Please also try the following method: How to force Kerberos to use TCP instead of UDP in Windows http://support.microsoft.com/kb/244474 Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT
