pete1131, You will need to statically set the ip addresses on both computers since you are using cross-over cables and no router. Try to set the IP of the machine with the modem connected to 192.168.1.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and the other computer with a subnet mask of 192.168.1.2 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. You should then be able to access the computer with the modem from the other. Let me know how that works for you.Viza

How do i reset the ip addresses?
January 13th, 2010 7:32pm

pete1131, Try this. Go to the Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Network Connections. Look for Local Area Connection, this is what it's named by default. Right click on it and go to properties. On the General Tab click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then click the Properties button. Make sure that you do not uncheck Internet Protocol. On the General Tab of Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties page click the Use the following IP Address: radio button. Once you do that fill in the IP address and Subnet masl fields. Then Click OK and then Click Close on the Local Area Connection Properties page. That should do it. Oh and the subnet mask may fill in automatically once you fill in the IP address field.Let me know how that works for you.Viza

I set all the numbers as you said but I still have no connection. (error 797, unable to find modem) The main computer says the cable is disconnected but the slave computer says it is connected via cable. Tried restarting both computers and unpluging the cable and re pluging it. even tried a new cable (crossover). On network connections this is what I see, Verizon wireless vz access connected, sharedIncoming connection No clients connectedlan or highspeed 1394 connection 3 connected,1394 net adapter #3Network bridge 7 connectedlocal area connection connected, bridged athros ar8121/ar8113/etcalso the ip address has reverted to the original number (75.211.201.7) WILL THIS EVER WORK????

pete1131, IP Config should list a lot more information than that. Did it give you a listing for all the adapters?

pete1131, Ok so I finally got it lab'd up with hyper-v. Now granted I didn't do it with a USB aircard but I don't currently have one to test with, I may get my hands on one this weekend. Instead of me typing up everything I did, I think you can just follow the instructions on the following page. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/306126Let me know how it works for you.Viza

I've tried this before and I don't think these instructions apply to my computers. ( XP pro. sp3 in both computers) These are not sp3 upgrades or down loads but are from a MS CD OS labled SP 3. This OS is somewhat diferent than the old sp2 OS. Some of the instructions do not appear on this computer. Those that do do not show the same results. I think the first problem to solve is the lack of connection between the two computers. The slave says it has connection via cable. The host computer says there is no connection. I have no file sharing or printer sharing. Is there any other way to connect two computers?

pete1131, I agree we should start by getting your two machines talking first. Check the speed and duplex of both machines NICs. Set them to the same setting, I would recommend setting them to 100/FULL. I know there can be issues when they are set to auto when connected to managed switches. If that doesn't work, is there any way you can install another nic in the host to eliminate a hardware issue? What about the potential of using a switch or hub?Viza

Reset both nic's to 100 duplex. still not working. The lan conections on both computers I'm sure are OK. These computers are less than a year old and both were networked on a hub when I was using "Hughes net" satalite access. their modem connected directly to the hub and everything worked fine. It' when I switched to Verizon with a USB modem that I encountered this problem. I was led to believe that all I needed to do was connect with a crossover Cat5 and use the Network setup wizard and XP pro would do the rest. I did try to connect with the hub both with a standerd lan cable and a crossover cable. I'm thinking of getting an ethernet card "PCI)". LAN connectors are on the mother boards. Both Asus P5QL PRO. ( the host computer is the only one that shows "cable unpluged". Looked at "device manager and it says the lan connector is working OK and turned on. What Now?

pete1131, From the ipconfig you ran earlier, it looks like you have a bridge setup. If you still have this configured you will need to break the bridge. Is this something that was created when you ran the Network Setup Wizard? After that you should be able to set the IP. If that works then maybe we can work on getting your ICS setup.Viza
