networking not quite right between Vista and Win7
My laptop runs Vista Premium, and I just installed Win7 on my home PC. I am able to connect to the Win7 system on the network with no issues. I am able to ping each system from the other. When I look at the network map on the Win7 PC, I can see the laptop, but it won't let me log on to it. I just keep getting the login screen asking me for a username/password to access the network resources. I have double checked firewall and virus protection to ensure that nothing is blocking access. I have disabled the firewall on both systems, setup exceptions for IP ranges in the virus protection. I do get a message that there is a duplicate IP address on the laptop running Vista, but when I look at the IP's, I don't see any duplication on the laptop or the home PC.If I can't fix it, it wasn't broke!

Gearjammer, You didn't mention this in your original post, but I assume you've double-checked your sharing settings from within Windows Vista? Refer to this document.-Alex

probably should have mentioned it, but yes, I have double and triple checked the sharing settings in both systems just to be sure that it is enabled and set correctly. If I can't fix it, it wasn't broke!

Is your Windows 7 machine attached to a homegroup?

I found my issue to be on my laptop. I checked the logs to see what was going on and found that windows was not allowing my ip address from my pc to connect to my laptop. I set up a few rules to allow that ip address and it is able to access now. Thanks for the responses. If I can't fix it, it wasn't broke!
