networking Win 7 and an XP machine in a WORKGROUP
I know. This has been asked a thousand times. I have read and been trying for 6 hours to resolve this issue. Please read at least the next couple of sentances. I followed the directions here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/033c418b-1096-4df7-bfad-fd3d431f3cd5 I believe all my settings are correct. I must be wrong but I can't figure out where. I had everything shared and working yesterday. But when I turnd the computers on this morning, XP could not connect to the Win 7 Share. I must have changed something but I do not know what. Here is the current state: Win 7 conforms to the article above. A second Win 7 computer can access the share on the original Win 7 machine. The Win 7 computer can connect to a share on the XP machine. The XP computer can ping the Win 7 computer When I type \\Pat\MyStuff1 into the RUN dialog on the XP machine, I get the error "the specified server cannot perform the requested operation". I don't know how to attach picutes here so I uploaded them to my photography web site. They show the settings I am using in Window 7. http://www.patrickdillonphotography.com/computer/share1.png http://www.patrickdillonphotography.com/computer/share2.png http://www.patrickdillonphotography.com/computer/share3.png http://www.patrickdillonphotography.com/computer/share4.png <== Just added to show connection properties Thanks, pat Notes as I continue to read other posts: \\192.168.200.31\mystuff1 does not connect either. I am running VMware. All computers are in Bridged mode, always have been and I just rechecked.

Did you verify the following settings under windows 7 at Advanced Sharing Settings, stuff like network discovery, file and printer sharing, file sharing is enable and turn on and password protected sharing is disable Once you done the above, go to windows 7 ctrl panel>network and internet>view network computer and devices and verify whether are you able to see both network as in windows 7 as well as win xp share Similarly go to windows xp machine and open up My Network Places to find the Windows 7 network and share, verify whether are you able to detect it. Lastly ensure there's no third party firewall on either rig other than windows firewall itself. Also have you try mapping the path using either's IP or comp name?

I have solved my problem. I can't explain why but I can explain how. I changed my Workgroup from WORKGROUP to something else. I changed mine to MPDGROUP. Once I did this to all the computers, all the computers began showing up when I clicked Network (Windows 7) or Windows network>Workgroups (Win XP). I also filled in a description for the Win 7 Computer. The description might have been blank before. To make sure this was the problem, I set all the computers back to WORKGROUP. Look at the jpg in the link below. With the workgroup set to WORKGROUP, an error was generated everytime I clicked on Windows Network>Workgroups. Yet I could use the run command to get to the computer and see the shares. It is a very contradictory image. http://patrickdillonphotography.com/computer/network1.jpg I hope this helps others. pat Daniel, thank you for taking the time to help out. I believe i did everything you suggested. Many of those suggestions are shown in the images I posted. I thought the image would eliminate any confusion. I was never able to see the Win 7 computer from Xp. But I was able to see XP computer from Win 7. THere are not third party firewalls. Windows firewall is disabled.
