network printer & photocopier sleep option causes internet loss on LAN , VISTA Network Connectivity Status Indicator NCSI
We have a Kyocera Mita KM-2050 KX photocopier/printer (network printer connected to LAN - 3 vista machines)and when the Kyocera goes into sleep mode my network icon indicates LAN access only and drops the internet connection icon (the globe icon disappears). Why would the sleep option of the network printer cause the globe to disappear? Please note we can access the internet as normal and the actual internet connection is not lost but the globe disappears to indicate it has!! I can startanyinternet browser and the globe icon reappears to indicate internet access once more - or if I leave it alone and view the network icons in the taskbar the icon animation showsactivity and sometimes the globe reappears itself - very strange!! If I commence windows network diagnostics at the point the globedisappears (I know its quite sad staring at the pc waiting for this to happen!!)windows reports back 'Windows did not find any problems with this computers network connection' We don't have any other issues with the vista machines. I totally understand the sleep options on the vista machines and the vista machines coming out of sleep or hibernation (as I have seen others have been having) can cause the adapters not to 'wake' or the power options on the network adapters could or may cause this HOWEVER all these options are off. There are no logs of these events in the event viewer in either system or administrative events. I have increased the sleep option timeout of the photocopier to the maximum allowed (2 hours) and the incident is less frequent but what I did witness once was when someone powered the photocopier off one night the same thing happened again!! I know someone may say well if increasing the sleep timer and the incident is less frequent then this case is solved but why does this occur in the first place!!?? I haven't seen this type of incident reported anywhere so far.

Hi, You may refer to the following article for more information about this behavior: The network connectivity status incorrectly appears as "Local only" on a Windows Server 2008-based or Windows Vista-based computer that has more than one network adapter http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947041 Hope the information is helpful.

Hello and thank you for your response.I have read the article kb947041 and it describes the issue perfectly however there is no suggested workaround or fix. Would you be aware of any resolution?

Hi, I am sorry to say currently there is no fix for this issue. Based on my understanding, this incorrect indication should not prevent the computer from accessing the network properly. The correct network status will be detected when other programs generate Internet traffic.

I'm having an issue similar to this, but the problem is that you say that when other programs generate internet traffic, the correct network status will be detected. In my case it does not. The globe will disappear, and stay disappeared. There is another Microsoft rep in this thread, but he/she has not responded to anymore of our posts. Perhaps you can shed some light on this.http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3819966&SiteID=17Thanks!

Hello ajm786,Before I comment on your issue I would like to state my opinion on something to see if we share a common viewpoint. Before anyone starts rolling their eyes because all you want is an instant fix PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read this.Windows Vista (in whatever edition you have) essentially is 'nice'. However it was supposed to be a MASSIVE step up from the XP system in terms of useability and the 'new features' Microsoft promised us. In all the years I have used XP I have never had to resort to posting my issues just to get answers or to see if it was just me going mad (let us be honest here) to some unexplainable behaviour that Vista demonstrates. All I wanted was a Operating Environment that worked - why is it that the more I use Vista I feel that my loyalty with XP has been taken advantage of? I have spent so much wasted time and effort to get answers to Vista's behaviour to the point that I have started to give up and not because I am a novice but because I know when I am being taken for a ride.We should collectively stand up and let Microsft know that enough is enough. We need to be critical with ourselves and state the obvious - Vista is bloated . After five years of development and US$6 billion of investment you have to ask yourself was it worth it? OF ALL THE TIME AND MONEY THEY INVESTED WAS THIS THE BEST THEY COULD DO? I know, I know some of you are reading this and don't give a s**t, why? - because all you want is your globe to reappear, this to work, that to work. Come on guys we shouldn't be doing this!! If this was a car you know the manufacturers would be facing a serious court action because the f****ing basics do not work or display strange system anomalies. In order to cover every base Vista is a nightmare. To normal users (no disrespect here) they will never even notice. Microsoft continues to waste our time, we are much more educated users now, does Microsoft think we are really that dumb? Folks on these forums will know exactly what I am talking about.YES - initially the speed and security of Vista seemed good and nice but when you get an issue is it worth it? NO! Tweak this, tweak that for speed ... I actaully have a life for crying out loud! Being system administrators gives us a somewhat totally different opinion on Vista as to what a novice user will.I have stopped devoting my time to fixing Vista issues because you know what? I took a step back and stopped giving a sh*t. The thing is I feel a million times better! If it doesn't work then it doesn't. To *** with microsoft because I will not fix their "silly small issues ***" for them because this is what we are doing! Yeah by all means help other folks but you have to draw the line somewehere!I am not moaning or bitching , just stating fact - if Microsoft spend US$6 billion dollars on the development of Vista were we not allowed to expect a pretty awesome operating environment? All I am saying is I expected much, much, much more and NO I won't use Apple before someone says "well if you dont like it then ...." because I am a big fan of Windows and just expected more. For the record I PREFER windows to os x before I hear all the stuff about "the mac is better than windows". I am not saying I am right just how it is to me.ajm786 I feel your pain - your issue has probably made you think why you got Vista in the first place right? Think about it ......
