What kind of home network are you referring to? It depends on what resources you want to share / be able to access and also what do you want to acomplish with the home network. The question you posted is quite vague. Please provide more information.

Hi,I assume you are using a simple home network such as Windows Vista computers are connected to a router. You can directly connect the Windows 7 computer to the router, setup the workgroup to the same as other Windows Vista computers. If needed, you can manually assign an IP address in Local Area Connection. In Network and Sharing Center --- Advanced haring settings, click options to turn on "network discovery", "file and printer sharing", "turn on Public sharing" if needed. HomeGroup is not necessary as there is no other Windows 7 systems on the network. Windows 7 is similar as Windows Vista, so settings in Windows 7 can be found in the same place as Windows Vista. If anything unclear please just update to the thread.

Thanks for the reply. Here is more detail. My set up is as follows: Cable into cable modem. Cable modem connected to D-link router. New Windows 7 Profpc(intel i5/4gig ram) is hooked to router via LAN. My laptop using Vista prem is using wireless. I am already getting on the internet with no issues with both computers. The problem is getting configured to share files and more importantly, to share my printer. The HP printer is hooked up to the new Windows 7 desktop. The printer works fine with the desk top but I cannot yet print from the laptop. I have followed the online instructions that I found by changing both to the same workgroup name. I have all of the sharing turned on that I can find, including the printer, on both pcs. I can see both PCs when I pull up network on both pcs. However, when I try to access the desk top from the laptop, it askes for a username and password. I had written down the password when I setup the work group on the desk top. I have tried that password, however, the instructions said nothing about having to enter a user name. Tried all names I could think of but no luck. Just for the reocrd, I had no trouble sharing between old XP desk top and Vista lap top. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,Let's first fix the network sharing issue and then go to the printer sharing. You said when you try to access the desktop (Windows 7) through network, it asks for a user name and password. Please try input the user name and password which exists on your desktop. Note 1: To avoid issue, let's use an administrator account. If there is no password set for the administrator account, setup one or we will not able to access it (unless change a group policy setting).Note 2: Next time we logon Windows 7, it may ask for input a password. We can let system automatically logon the account. That will be another issue and we can discuss it later.Note 3: You can even setup a new admin account, setup a password and use the new account to access from the laptop. If there is any error, please write it down in detailand let me know. You can also help capture a screenshot. Here are the steps to upload a picture. (Important: It will be provided to public, you can reject to provide a screenshot but just give me the error message)

Thanks for your reply. I was able to get every thing (including the printer) to work. Just turned off on my new Win 7 computer the need for a password. As you told me, with the password feature checked, the person using it from the lap top had to have a user account on the win 7 pc, thus the request for the user id and password. Again, thanks for your help.
