network issues, Can't connect to DHCP server.
so i'm having issues trying to connect to the internet, but it seems to be a little beyond me whats going on soi will try to explain the best way possible. (note: i had Comcast cable services before i move to my new location accross the country and now trying to get calbe internet services again) Ok i have a modem Motorola surfboard the 5101 model, when i turn it on and connect it to the computer i pull up IP info as follows (OS win7) ipv4= 192.168.100.11, subnet=255.255.255.0, gateway=192.168.100.1 to my knowlage this is the routers IP info so you can log in via IP and change config. ok so as soon as i plug up the cable line (an Active comcast cable line) it resets IP info because DHCP is enabled obviouisly and get new IP info ipv4=169.254.72.139 subnet=255.255.0.0, gateway=0.0.0.0 ok to my understanding that is a "APIPA" because the modem can't reach the DHCP server it is assigning a privite IP to my PC. (at this point i can no longer acces the modem via IP because gateway =0.0.0.0) I try'd IPconfig /release error occurred while releasing interface Local Area connection: an addres has not yet been associated with the network end point, error occurred while realeaseing loopback PSeudo-interface 1: the system cannot find the file specified. thin network & sharing center it shows up as unidentified network, I check event viewer and Summary page events I see that i get Error-Event ID 4199//system detected address conflict for IP address 192.168.100.1 with the system having network hardware address 00-25-A1-CB-BO-D6 (note: not same mac address as shown just random dig.) network operations on this system may be disrupted as a result. as well event log app. level-info. event ID 1001, dont know if that has an relavance. so with that i'm freaking out dont really know what to do or if this is an ISP, issue and my modem is fine IDK. (i've try'd several things so please don't say restart, power cycle or firewall like the Tech help desk tier 1 support would say to do) maybe i'm over looking something else thast small but IDK. thank you please someone respond

If you have a router, the modem does not connect to your PC. The comcast cable connects to the modem. The modem connects to the router. Your pc connects to the router. The router gets a public IP from Comcast. Your pc connects to the router and gets a private IP address from DHCP on the router. The router (192.168.0.1) is your default gateway. Your IP is 192.68.0.11. The router looks after translating your private IP so that you can reach the Internet through the modem and the Comcast cable. Bill

Hi, May I know this is your network topology? Internet------------Modem------------Windows 7 Computer Is the Internet connection established via your Windows 7 computer with a PPPoE connection or just from the Modem? Please also provide more information about this modem, such as brand and model. At this time, please also try the following: 1. Please connect other computer to the modem and see if it works; and connect the Windows 7 computer to some other network and have a check. 2. Boot the Windows 7 computer to Safe Mode with networking and check the issue I suspect the DHCP server is at your ISP; if so, please also contact your ISP for further investigation. Thanks.
