network connection slow to setup
HiHave Microsoft changed the way network adapters negotiate settings because after the op sytem as loaded I now have to sit and wait for the network icon to first show the blue circle then the yellow triangle before the internet is available. This seems to take considerably longer than before. This is also the case with my vista installation and a search on the internet shows other people are having similar problems. I have booted my cable modem then router before turning on the PC to have the connection available but this makes no difference. I have tried the connection without the router in circuit and that makes no difference. I have tried another nic card (realtek) as well as both my onboard nics (nvidia) and that makes no difference (all drivers up to date).I have stripped startups down to the minimum and that makes no difference. If I sit and wait at the logon prompt before typing my password then it appears to be faster when the desktop appears. I supect it is a negotiation problem but I want to put my settings back to what they were before so does any one know how. Before anyone suggests its a virus both system are fully up to date and the vista is running one care and the windows 7 is running MSE.Please note there is nothing wrong with my cable connection it is all set up and ready before I turn on the PC.windows 7 enterprise 64 bit, msi platinum, nvidia 8600gt, amd 64 bit x2 4200, 4 gig ddr2

HiI have sat and watched this and If I sit at the logon prompt after about 20 seconds there is disc activity and the modem leds flash. I then log on and the network is then available almost immediatly. It appears that Microsoft may have delayed network configuration to enable the desktop and other programs to load more quickly. Incidently this is the same on my vista machine and i am sure it happened on that after an update. I still want to know how to get rid of this delay.malc

Hi,I have noticed connectivity can sometimes slow down, but I concluded that it's the router that's causing the issue.Don't panic LOL, there is a simple solution (that has worked for me every time), if you reboot your router it will reset the internal connections. After about 2mins (max) you will be able to connect again, probably automatically too.The good thing about this process is that it gives your router that 'Out of Box' functionality so it should be tonnes faster. To reboot your router you will need to unplug/switch off the router, using a pen or similar small pointing device click the 'reset' button that's on the back (or should be) for between 5-10 seconds. Now turn on the router and it will go through the reset process...1, Checking internal configuration & resetting ip address2, Checking connectivity to machine3, Checking and activating wireless capabilities (if applicable)4, Checking internet connectivityHope this helps :)Jeff

HiFrom my original post above I have tried it without the router in circuit and its still the same.It is not wireless and is connected with an ethernet cable direct to the router. As I have said I have tried it connected to the cable modem directly and its still the same. The cable modem and router are fully booted and have leds indicating everything is ok with them.I am convinced that Microsoft have altered the way the network is configured at boot. I seem to remember it started on my vista installation after the latest service pack was installed. I only want Microsoft to verify if they have altered the network configuration sequence and if so how I can change it on windows 7.malc

Hi,
Just for a test, will it also be slow when you boot the Safe Mode with networking?
On my understanding, when the computer starts up, I think time may be taken to wait the NIC initialized, obtain the IP Address and other network information, and identify the network type, etc.
If you have another Windows 7 computer on the same network, please check how it works.
Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

HiI have tried to do the safe mode with networking which bought up another problem in that i cannot log onto safe mode as my profile cannot be loaded for some reason. I will mark your post as an answer as I am pretty sure that it is an intialising delay. As I am only using the enterpise as a test bed for some programs that I have written I will ignore the delay with it being close to the release. I am now going to try and find out why I cant log on to safe mode which I consider a more serious problem. If it wasnt so close to the release when I will be installing my new version then I would have done a reinstall. Thanks for your helpmalc
