network connection fails at Network Authentication
When I try to connect to my wireless router via windows 7 I get prompted for the WPA2 key, then a Windows Security box pops up asking for Network Authentication and I need to enter a user name and password, I enter the user name I am logged in to Win 7 with and then the connection fails. I have tried with a password for the user and tried with an account that did not have a password, same results, FAIL.I can connect to the router from the same PC with XP and do not have any problems connecting.I have never used Vista, I am making the jump from XP to win 7.

Same problem here! When I try to connect my notebook (Acer Aspire 5930G) to my wireless-LAN router it doesn't work. I have an Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN and an Arcor router (German DSL provider). Every time I want to connect it says that no connection could be done (Windows 7). As I said, this problem already existed with Vista where it said "key not value" or "timeout" although everything was configured the right way.It is a known problem of Vista and many people are affected by this with different WLAN-controllers and routers. It can't be possible that this issue survives in Windows 7!!! I had Windos XP on this notebook before and everything worked fine. Why isn't it possible with the youngest Windows versions?Anyway Microsoft has to fix this problem as soon as possible! Even Ubuntu has no problems directly after installation!

I am using a Rosewill RNX-N100 IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB2.0 Wireless-N 2.0 Dongle, with the drivers win7 loaded automatically when it found the device connected.

This might be completely unrelated to your problem, but I've found some newer Acer laptops with Vista unable to handle certain ranges of wireless channels. If I remember correctly I solved the problem by forcing my router to use channel 7, but you might want to try different values anyway.

Tried that, but no success.

I'm assuming you both have WEP or WPA/WPA2 enabled. Have you tried temporarily running your wireless unencrypted?

I did, and without authentification or WEP it works. But that's not secure enough. When I use WPA /WPA2 it doesn't work anymore.

I can remember solving the exact same problem on my dad's Acer laptop with Vista. Have you tried running WPA instead of WPA2?

Open Services and try stoppingand starting "WWLAN AutoConfig"

I ended up having to manually add the connection for my work access point that is setup with WPA. I will post the exact steps I went through Monday when I get back into the office. I will have to remove and re-add it to get all the steps, can't remember them off the top of my head. I had to do this for both Vista and Windows 7. I don't know if it will help or not but it worked for me.

ive got the same problem... I installed win7 at work were we have a wireless with wep encrypted internet access, no problem loggin on. (Zyxel wireless router)At home with were my network is wpa2 encrypted, it doesnt wanna logon. (so right now im on an local unencrypted network). Some time i cant even see it on my list of network, (even though, my IBM T43 with XP, see it without any problems and is/can log on to it) and a refresh doesnt help :(my laptop is an lenovo x61s type: 7667w2s, AP is Zyxel(on channel 13, with wpa2-psk/AES).So as i see it, it's a win7 problem with wpa(?)/wpa2, as i can logon with out encryption and with wep encryption.

Sorry for not posting this yesterday, forgot my power cord at the office and found out my battery is bad the hard way. Anyway here's my steps: Open Network & Sharing Center Setup a new connection or network Pick Manually connect to a wireless network, pick on Next Manually enter "Network name:" Select "Security type: WEP, WPA, WPA2", pick Next (under here I had WEP, WPA-Personal, WPA2-Personal, WPA-Enterprise, WPA2-Enterprise) Pick on "Change connection settings" Pick on the "Security" tab Select the type at Choose a network authentication method (Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) was the default) Pick on the Settings button next to the authentication method. In the next window, I unchecked Validate Server Certificate. Under Select authentication method, pick on Configure, in the next window, uncheck Automatically use my windows logon name and password (and domain if any). You might have to try diferent options once you get to the "Change connection setings". Everthing after that is what I had to do to connect to my work AP. Hope this helps some of you anyway.

I've met the same problem. The wireless network in my school requires a login authentication. For quite a few times after I entered my school ID and password, it still gave me a "limited network" status. I use the exact network configuration instructed by the school's network admin, including stuff like "uncheck Automatically use my windows logon name and password" mentioned by someone above. Sometimes it justmiraculously worked. This is confusing the heck out of me. My computer is a Lenovo Ideapad S10 equipped with a Broadcom wireless adapter. btw, there's no problem while I use wireless network at home when there's no login required.

@ RL Gartin:It doesn't really help. I use WPA or WPA2, but only personal because my router doesn't understand enterprise. And when I try the settings you told I can't type a key. No chance to connect to my router, but thanks for your help.

Perhaps someone interested in new developments ;) Today I installed the new driver 12.4.0.0 for my Intel Wifi Link 5100 and now the network authentification works properly under Vista. That should be the same now with Windows 7 when you are using this driver there. After a couple of months - nearly years - Intel seemed to fix this problem.
