net framework 4 would not install?
I am trying to install the silverlight Web installer as per http://www.Microsoft.com/Web. And it fails consistently with this part of the error log: ====================== 7/14/2010, 15:48:18] Action: Performing Action on Exe at C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Temp\Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Setup_4.0.30319\Windows6.1-KB958488-v6001-x86.msu... Hi Ross, have you tried downloading it to your machine and running it locally? Have you got any other .net installed? May be worth reinstalling them with a reboot in between? Let us know how you get on. Ollie.Life is just one big learning curve, lets skate on knowledge

thank you Ollie, for the response! first thing I tried was pulling the previous.net's (2.5 with Ajax extensions and 3.0) and a reboot. Do I have to install previous versions in order to run 4.0? Have you any idea what might be causing the 4.0 installation to fail? Ross

please copy the file "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log" to your document folder (otherwise you can't open it) and open it with notepad. Now search for errors. Which errors do you see? If you are unsure, please upload the complete CBS.log to your SkyDrive [1] and post a link here. Ensure you have the full version to start with which should be 869kb-ish. Also ensure you have permissions, you should be able to right click and shift to get "run as"...use administrator credentials. (unless you have admin rights) Not sure what causes it to fail, read Andre's response so developers (software guru's) can have a look at more detailed info. Usually a case of something missing in order to install it or permissions. Keep us up to date mate.Life is just one big learning curve, lets skate on knowledge

here is a link, I think, to a small 78 K log instead of the 15 MB monster log I had previously posted. Sorry about the previous log! http://cid-fe8f7d06cb5f5fd5.office.live.com/browse.aspx/cbslog Is this a good link? Ross

Hi Ross, the logs says the following messages: Failed call to CryptCATAdminAddCatalog. [HRESULT = 0x8000ffff - Unknown Error] Failed to install catalog file. while reading information about the Update KB982666. So dealing with catalog files fails. Is the cryptography service running? and a mere 16k log http://cid-fe8f7d06cb5f5fd5.office.live.com/self.aspx/cbslog/shortCBS.log on the standalone .net4 installer, "run as administrator" against an empty CBS log

Still the same issue. Is the service running or not?"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

yes, I checked and found that the cryptographic services were running and in fact I stopped and restarted them. Same results. Can I remove and then reinstall these services? And if so how? This is very discouraging! Thanks for your help, Andre, in any case... Ross

First, please download Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) to see if the updates can be installed. After you run the tool, a file called checkSUR.log is created in the folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS. Please open it and look if the tool was able to fix all errors. Also, you can try the following suggestions for further troubleshooting: 1. Download .NET Framework 4.0 Standalone installer Note: You can try some download manager software to help downloading. 2. Use Cleanup tool to clear the failed installation of .NET Framework 4.0 3. Run the installer to install .NET 4.0 with Administrator Privilege Note: Right-click the installer and then click "Run as Administrator" If the issue still exists, you can post a thread on .NET Framework Setup Forum for more specific suggestions. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.
