net config server /hidden:yes command does not hide Windows 7 machines from being visible with network browser
The net config server /hidden:yes command does not hide Windows 7 machines from being visible with network browser. This command works with prior versions of Windows, including Vista. I have tested it with Windows 7 7100 both 32 bit and 64 bit. Is there a new option in Windows 7 to hide or unhide machines in the network?

It appears Windows 7 lacks the registry value for the command to work as intended. You may try adding it by going into the registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters and create and set value Hidden from 0 to 1 which should be of type DWORD. You should then reboot. Does this help?

Thanks for the reply. I do have that registry value added. However, it does not hide the machine from the network browser.

Well there must be a way, or the command should give an error. I'll keep digging.

Did you ever find a solution for this? I have some machines that it seems to work and others where it does not work.

So far, no. It seems to work in Vista but not Win7.

First you need to run a command prompt "as Administrator" by right clicking on the command prompt start icon. Net enter the followingnet config server /hidden:yesYou can also control this via GPO with a custom adm file with this setting.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, that is exactly the process I tested and it fails to work. It was the same method required with Vista to run the command as Administrator.
