Yes, you can use third party software, if you either created a 'rescue disk' or you have another operating system on the same computer. Your manufacturer may or may not have provided you with such software, but most are lite versions that work. Your antivirus company might have software, just download a trial. Also, you can just redownload the setup files of your programs after. If it is a paid app, ask the manufacturer (assuming that you still have your product key) Let's face it: sometimes you just have to repurchase things you have already bought :-(. ***don't buy again before you try the next method first!!! For some simple programs, you can actually do xcopy "[wherever your programfiles are]" "[wherever you want to copy the backup]" this is even possible on the Windows repair disk via the built-in cmd tool. If you have the Windows installation disk, that can act as one. If you don't, ask your manufacturer. Well you have it backwards. You needed to have created the backup before the problem. You can boot to the installation dvd and select language and region, then select install, then choose Upgrade. That will retain your data and applications. Will the system boot and runs poorly or are you not able to start Windows? There are other methods to repair. The above is the last attempt and may not be what you need.

Nano, you can't do a non destructive upgrade install by booting to the installation DVD. You have to initiate the install from within windows 7 itself. See this posting . The OP can invoke the following options by booting to the install disk and invoking Startup repair and/or System Restore by following the instructions given here .Startup Repair will try to fix boot problems automatically and System Restore will restore the System Files (not data and program files) to an earlier date before the corruption occurred. If the system is bootable, he can check and repair system file validity by running SFC /scannow from a command prompt opened with run as administrator. Jerry

Hi ags84, If the system crashed, you can perform an in-place upgrade to fix the system issue, and this method will not remove the applications and settings. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099 Regards, Leo Huang Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
