If you are talking about a BIOS level password (you are required to enter a password as soon as you turn the computer on) then you will need to reset the BIOS to default to clear any passwords. Follow the instructions here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5150/en/sm/syssetup.htm#wp1100963 If you are talking about a Windows password, then use NTpasswd to clear passwords from the built-in Administrator or any other administrative user account.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

You've completely confused me. I gave you all the answers already, both for how to fix the Windows password issue and how to fix a BIOS password issue. What part of this didn't you understand? I'm glad to clarify if you didn't understand something but I don't get where you're going with this thread at all.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Please read the instructions again. In order to create and boot with the NTpasswd CD (and yes, you want to use a CD-R) you need to: 1. Download the .iso for the bootable CD. 2. Use a third-party burning program to create the bootable CD. Windows XP has no native ability to burn an image. 3. Using the third-party burning program of your choice (Roxio, Nero, ImgBurn, etc.) burn the .iso as an image, not as data. Perhaps this is where you messed up. 4. Set the system to boot from the optical drive first. 5. Put the NTpasswd CD into the optical drive, boot from it, NTpasswd will run. It is a text-based Linux program but if you read the directions carefully it isn't difficult. 6. Change the built-in Administrator password to a blank. You can also change any other administrative user's password to a blank. 7. After you have made your changes with NTpasswd, remove the CD and boot into Windows. Log into whatever account you changed.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I don't know what you're doing wrong and I don't think there's anything further I can do since I can't see your computer. Take the machine to a competent local professional (not a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place) and the tech will be into your machine in under 2 minutes. I'm sorry I was unable to help you.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I am having a similar problem. My son forgot his password on Windows Vista, he was the only user set as an administrator. I tried the safemode login suggested here for xp, but that did not work. I tried finding the original disk for a clean install but could not locate it, and wondering if it is stored on the hard drive but I am not sure how to do that, please help with any suggestions.

My Friend is having the same problem with her PC. She created an "Administrative User Account" and forgot her password. She has the only User Account and the only other is under "Guest". She cannot create another User Account because she can't logon to her User Account and the Guest Account is blocked from any Administrative program. She can't even access Help and Support. It won't let her do anything without her original Window's logon PASSWORD. Do you have any suggestions on how she can bypass the login and get into the Administrator account. She really needs to do a system restore and the only account she can get on is the GUEST USER PROFILE.

And here you are again, right after I replied to you in another old, closed thread. Next time make a new post. You can ignore the questions I asked you in the other thread to which you posted since you gave more details about the issue in this one. Standard answer: If you have forgotten your password, if you have another user account with administrative privileges you can log into that account and change your original user account's password from the User Accounts applet in Control Panel. If you don't have another account like this set up or don't have the password to it, you'll need to log into the built-in Administrator account. In XP Home, boot the computer into Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get you to the right menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not work here. Once in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden Administrator account. The default password is a blank. In XP Pro, you do not need to go into Safe Mode. At the Welcome Screen, do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the classic Windows logon box. Type in "Administrator" and whatever password you assigned when you set up Windows. If you have XP Pro or Media Center and were using the built-in Administrator account for your regular work and it is therefore the only user account on the system, there are ways to change the password for that account to a blank. Microsoft doesn't permit us to tell you how in these forums. Their house, their rules. Use Google or ask a local computer tech (not a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place). One more question, once I log in this way will I be able to do a system restore under that user account?

Thank you so much for posting this problem/answer!! I set myself up as administrator on my daughter's computer six months ago and set up some dumb password reminder that obviously didn't remind me well enough! I forgot my password and needed to go in to do some updates and clean up her drive... Needless to say when I couldn't remember my Administrator password I was pulling my hair out and about ready to crack open the computer!! Thanks so much! You saved me over $1400 bucks on a new laptop!
