multiple nics one computer
Hi I run a program that requires it to access a private network on my computer. However, I also need this same computer to access the internet. Is it possible to install another network interface card on the computer and configure my browser to just use that connection and my other program to use the connection for the private network? I know that technically this is not safe because you are potentially opening up the private network to outside access but I do not care about that.

Yes, you can add the other NIC. If you only need access to that private network, configure the NIC with an IP on that sepecific subnet, but do not include a default gateway. This configuraiton will allow you to access the hosts on the private network and continue to access your common network and internet as usual. Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.

Hi, JM is right and in fact is easy to add a second card. About your security fears they are true as long as you share the "External" with the internal network. In Windows, it acts as a short circuit between both segments. You must use Windows Advanced Firewall to prevent the traffic and not to Share. This is called Internet Connection Sharing or Network Bridge (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee126153(WS.10).aspx). But as long as this bridge isn't set, the process in the computer use the address to direct the process to the required network.
