migrating data between user accounts
Hi All: I used the easy transfer wizard to back up some vista user accounts and then restored them on a new 7RTM install. The accounts were created on the new box just fine. This box is part of a 2008 domain, and I created a new domain user account profile on the 7 box (it didn't exist on the vista box). I'd like to move some of the account data from the transfered accounts into this new account, like my outlook pst files, address book, etc...stuff that used to be in "local settings" in vista's user profile. When I log into the 7 box as the adminstrator account (I enabled it), and adjust my folder prefs to view hidden/system files, I can't find the stuff that used to be in "local settings". Is there any way to dig out that data manually, or do I have to log in as the local user, export various stuff, then re-import into the domain user account?Or, is there any way to use the migration wizard to merge the old local user profile with the new domain user profile?TIA

Hi, please have a look at the link below: Managing Users, Groups, and User Profiles You can use the User State Migration Tool (USMT) to migrate user data and settings to the users' new computers. Translate local profiles as a separate step from the user account migration process. Select User profiles option on the Translate Objects page of the Security Translation Wizard. Translate local user profiles for a batch of users immediately after migrating those users. The User State Migration Tool (USMT) for Windows 7 is now part of Windows AIK and provides fast and flexible options to migrate user profiles and data from one operating system to another. You can download the AIK via the link below: The Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK) for Windows 7 Besides, if you only need to transfer one user accounts profile, you can simple follow the steps below to transfer the profile. Transfer user profile =============== Log on the computer via the domain account. Please make sure that it is an administrator account. 1. Click the Start menu, and click Computer. 2. Click the Organize button on the left top corner and choose Folder Options. 3. Under View tab, check the "Show hidden files and folders" box and click OK to save settings. 4. Navigate to the C:\Users\(old user name) folder. Note: I assume that Windows 7 is installed on the C: partition. 5. Copy all files and folders in the C:\Users\(old user name) folder to the C:\Users\(new user name) folder. Note: To copy all files, we can press Ctrl+A, and then Ctrl+C in the C:\Users\(old user name) folder. After that, navigate to the C:\Users\(new user name) folder, click Ctrl+V. I wish the suggestions will be helpful. Cecilia Zhou

Re: Cecilia Zhou First - This is on a stand alone laptop. I have a standard home network but not a domain. Now - regarding Cecilia's answer: Ok - I've done that. I actually have 3 copies of my XP User data. In reality what I really want to do is to MERGE all that information into the PUBLIC user. Most of it is already there but because of the way your collegues have set up the system I end up needing the information from the Admin user with the non-admin users. I copied the data to the Non-Admin user and they eventually diverged so much, after a while I copied everything to public except a couple of letters I wanted to make sure nobody who I let use my pc would have access to. So Now I have 3 copies of the data. and again the goal is to merge the majority of the data to PUBLIC. I alredy have set my Office on all the users to default to Public Documents. Music and videos etc are a different story. :-( They take up WAY more space than my documents too. I'd just like to get a lot of that disk space back in that I don't need nor want 3 copies of most of my data. Thanks for any suggestions. The Blind Old Ump!
