Hi,

I have been asked to look at providing clients the ability to conference to our service desk which will remove the need to call in.

I was thinking about some kind of  chat room on our companys website which can then be turned into a video call.  Is this possible as my clients will be conneting from the internet and won't always have lync installed locally.

I don't think there is such a chat room in Lync.If you deployed Lync server 2013,you can use Lync web app to connect video conferencing from internet.In Lync Server 2013, Lync Web App replaces Lync 2010 Attendee,it now provides a full in-meeting experience, including computer audio and video,just need  install the sharing plug-in either when you join the meeting or when you initiate one of these features.
