I think you're confused between RAM - wihch is Memory - and Disk Space.Upgrading the RAM (which is what you appear to have done) will not change the amount of free disk space (which is wha the 3% free figure comes from - I think!) Where exactly are you seeing this 3% number?Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC

Thank you for replying - i see the 3% when i go to disc defragment. When i click my computer then right click disk drive c then properties it says used space 72.1 GB free space 2.31 GB capacity 74.4 GN and there is barely any pink in the pie graph. I'm confused on the free space because it wasnt that low before i installed the extra RAM but my comnputer is old i got it in 2004 so it very well may need a new hard drive. Is there a way for me to tell for sure or have i already been told by seeing the 3% in disc defrag? Any input you have i would really appreciate and thanks for your time.

As I suspected - your Hard disk is nearly full - and you have a LOT of RAM!You need to replace the drive with a bigger one (or at least add a larger drive as a secondary) In the meantime - a few tips1) Copy all old data files off to external stoage, and once you're sure they are secure, delete them from your drive.2) Disab;e Hibernation3) reduce the size of the Virtual Memory - with 2.5GB RAM, you should be able ot get away with just 500MB of VM4) Use Disk Cleanup to free some space5) Uninstall unused programs6) reduce the size of the Temporaary Interet Files allocatin to 40MBSee if that's freed enough space for you to defrag. Thank you I will try that if i may ask 1 more question please - i have a dell dimension 2400 and would you know wheater i should add a secondary hard drive or relace the old one with a new one? I've asked Dell but they wouldnt help or is there somewhere i can get information because i dont know too much about hard drives as you can see and i dont want to do anything i shouldnt.

Your case only has space for the one drive - so you'd have to replace the drive, which is a fairly complex operation, involving cloning your old drive to the new one, and then expanding the partition - probably best to get your local techy to do it. If you have a 512MB stick of RAM installed, remove it and see if you'restill getting the "disk full" error. There may be an internal conflictcaused by the extra RAM.As Noel stated, if you are out of disk space, you should replace your drive. If you feel like taking on the challenge yourself, there are a number of free imaging or cloning programs available, and instruction on how to use them. Google is your friend. . .If you feel that it is too daunting of a task, get either a local shop to doit or a knowledgeable friend to help you do it. Always good to learn new things :-)-- SC Tom

I'm confused on the free space because itYes, you are confusing disk space and memory. They are two differentthings. Here's my standard post on the subject:The term "memory" is used to refer to the place where the computerholds the program and data it is working with at the moment. It'snormally random access memory (RAM), but that can be extended with thepage or swap file on the hard disk. The word "memory" is never used torefer to the space on a drive (whether that's a hard drive, diskette,CD, DVD, or thumb drive). Space on a disk drive is normally called"storage" or simply "disk space." Calling disk space "memory" isn't so much wrong as justunconventional. In a sense, disk space is, of course, memory, but theimportant thing to realize is that the word is never used that way,and if you do so, you do it at the risk of seriously confusing youraudience. So adding memory when you were low on disk space wasn't a necessarything to do, and was probably a waste of money.wasnt that low before i installed the extra RAM but my comnputer is old i got it in 2004 so it very well may need a new hard drive. Is there a way for me to tell for sure or have i already been told by seeing the 3% in disc defrag? Any input you have i would really appreciate and thanks for your time. Why it got that low around the time you installed the memory, I don'tknow, but one isn't related to the other. There are various things you can do when you are low on disk space, but they are essentially only stopgap measures, and the problem willquickly return. Your 75GB Drive is tiny these days. The only realsolution to your problem is to buy another, considerably bigger harddrive. Fortunately they are very inexpensive these days.Ken Blake
