long delays accessing network folders or files
Hi!I have a strange problem with the network folders in windows vista which are shared by a win xp pro computer (over wlan router). When i try to access the folders by typing \\Computer\folder in explorer it takes a long while to open it (10 seconds delay). After that everything works normal, but a few minutes later, clicking on a differnet network folder may cause the delays again. If i open a Word Document with Office 2003 it might work 5 times normally with no delays. Next time i open a word document it also takes about 10 seconds to open. So it works ~ 80% of the time, the other 20% it causes about 10 seconds of network delay. All network settings shout be configured correctly, that means static ip addresses, same user accounts at both computers and so on. I tried a lot of things to solve this problem...It is curious, that opening PDF files for example NEVER causes this delay. This might have to do with Office creating temp ~filename.doc files? Write access rights are set...I tried to monitor the network with Network Monitor 3 but i couldnt find anything special...Any solutions? Thanks in advance!

Hi, Thank you for the post. Before we go further, I would like to confirm the following points with you: 1. Does the issue occurs when opening a new blank Word file? 2. Does the issue occurs when using wired connection? Meanwhile, please perform the following troubleshooting steps: ============================== 1. Turn off Auto Tuning on the Windows Vista machine:1). Click Start, and type cmd in the Start Search box.2). Right-click the cmd icon, and select Run as Administrator.3). In the Command Prompt, type the following command:netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled4). After that, please check the result.Note: Please re-enable Auto Tuning by typing the following command if the above steps cannot fix the issue:netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal 2. Please install the update KB938194 and KB938979 on the Windows Vista machine and check the result. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Thanks for your reply!1. Yes, it occurs when opening a blank Word file from the remote network folder (CPU load is normal)2. Yes, wired connection with router or also direct cable connection causes this problem.I applied your advices. Updates were already installed, changing the settings made no difference.I have to correct my previous post. The problem also occurs when opening PDFs. When the Computer is idle for some minutes and i open a Word document from a mounted network drive, the problem occurs 100%. Another example:I play music which is stored on the remote network folder, after a few songs, when the next song is loaded, the music program doenst respond for about 10 seconds, before starting the next song.best regards!

We are having the exact some problems. We have searched and searched and so far we can only tell that computers that are syncing only have problems. Offline Files is disabled but Offline Web Pages is not.

Hi Joson! Thanks for your last reply. Im afraid it didnt solve the problem.BUT in the meantime i got a solution!I formatted the laptop and installed Vista Business. After setting up everything it finally works! The delays are gone, i dont no why exactly.Perhaps Vista Home Premium provided by Dell was the problem? Or the big amount of pre installed software from Dell ? Do you have a clue?Im very glad to have that Business license (msdnaa). Thanks for your help!Best regards!

Will this solution also work with XP? I have a extremely slow response in my IE address bar and when I open my computer it does a "search" before findingthe "C" drive. I do not have a[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer]String, which could be part of the problem. Thanks fo any help. Sam
