local access only, limited connectivity, unidentified network...
I have had this same problem after owning a Studio XPS 64-bit (wired with Bountiful router). Everything was fine untill this past Sunday, Norton did a Live Update. BINGO!!! Local acces only, limited connectivity, unidentified network. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I have2 laptops in the house andthey connected fine. I called Dell, Microsoft, Bountiful and even my ISP. Nobody had a clue. I logged onto this forum and tried everything everyone was saying to try (except throwing the computer against a brick wall and selling it on eBay). The last thing I did was to go to the device manager and right click on the network card adapter, click properties, go to power management and uncheck all of the boxes. Close out everything and re-boot. BINGO BANGO!!! Hellow internet!!! We love using Vista but this problem was very annoying to say the least. It took me 2 days to get it right but it seems to be back to normall now and I am posting this using my desk top. I re-installed Norton 360 because I just don't like haveing no protection. If it happens again, at least I will know a little more on how to fix it next time. I hope this helps someone out there. Good Luck!!! Hi, Thank you for your post. Regarding the issue, generally, it can be caused by several factors. At this time, I would like to share some of them for your reference as well: 1. Windows Vista cannot obtain a proper IP address. The Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 2. The NIC is not working properly. If so, we may need to reinstall or upgrade the NIC driver. There is a possibility that the NIC is damaged, and we need to check the hardware as well. I am glad that the issue has been fixed with your efforts. Hope this can be a good reference for other users who meet this kind of issues. Local access only, limited connectivity, unidentified network issues w Vista Had the same issue and tried everything ipconfig, regedit, re-install drivers and hardware, power-cycling, un-install XP Service 2, TCP/IP stack repair, shut off all IPv6 interfaces, Microsoft path, everything! Nothing worked! The only thing I knew for sure was the problem occurred after I after un-installed Norton 360. However, didnt think it was a Norton issue since I thought I completely un-installed the program/software. After a day of trouble shooting, I starting wondering, was Norton the issue! I downloaded Norton Removal Tool and it worked! http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20090303093300EN Never liked Norton and now dislike it even more! Hope this helps anyone with the same issue/problem..

Well, after 4 days, reading and and trying so many posts, i came across a simple solution, so far it is working, let me know if it works for you as well.note: I did this on a Vaio Soney Z and of courese the Vista thingopen: Network and Sharing Center on the left pan click and open : Manage network connections you should see the Wireless Network Connection/Unidentified netwrokhighlight that icon and right click on it, click on Properties, click continue when prompted by Windows, click the Sharing tap on the top of the Wireless Network Connection Properties Check the the first option box (Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection).click OK .cold start the computer.

Thank you very much!!! Today my mothers internet seem to stop working. Her laptop is about a year old and it wasn't making any sense to me at all. Seems it was due to Norton 360 running out of credit and was stopping the connection to the internet. I tired to remove it via add/remove but it didn't fix the issue. The removal tool did. So thank you again.

I ran into the problem of being unable to connect to the internet getting the “limited connectivity, unidentified network” message. The message further indicated I was connected to our wireless home network with limited connectivity but the end result was no internet access. The short answer to my solution was to unplug my CISCO router, plug it back in and the problem was solved. Below is more information about my specific case. The problem arose on our laptop running Vista when it suddenly stopped connecting to the internet, getting the above messages about limited connectivity, unidentified network. At this same time, one of our TV’s that connected to Netflix via a Blu-ray player, also stopped connecting being unable to find the network. I was still able to connect to the internet using our desktop computer running Windows 7 64 bit (not a wireless connection), was still able to connect to Netflix on another TV and was still able to connect to our wireless network and the internet with an iPad. Researching this issue on the internet, there were many possible causes and suggested solutions. None of those solutions worked for me and I’m just glad it just occurred to me to simply disconnect the router and then plug it back in. About a week prior to the issue, I had installed Norton Internet Security on the laptop and thought this may be the cause of the problem but uninstalling it did not resolve the problem. I have reinstalled NIS and it works fine since employing the solution that worked for me. Before finding my solution I also looked at our router firmware but it was up to date and determined that was not related to the problem. Also tried some of the other ideas related to internet connection properties but again none of those were related to the issue. Not sure if my solution will work for others but it’s a pretty easy step to take when looking to resolve this problem.
