limited or no connevtivity
I have a laptop running Windows XP Pro and i'm having a wireless connection problem. I am connecting to the network with a strong signal strength but with an error message of limited or no connectivity. When running a repair function I get the error message 'can not renew IP address.' Settings are to obtain IP address automaticly. same for DNS. I have run out of ideas, thanks for any help you can give.2 people need an answerI do too

Hi lophlier, Can you give me a few more details, e.g. what other devices do you have on the network, is it personal or business network service, and do you have access to the router's control panel? I have had some issues recently regarding IP address, which can cause limited or no connectivity, and was able to resolve them so hopefully I can be of some assistance. If you get back to me with some more details I'll see what I can do. Regards, DanielProfession: IT Administator for a UK Small Business | Level of Expertise: Intermediate (Self-Taught)

Hi Daniel It is a personal Secure network with two (2) computers hard wired to a linksys WRT54G router and two (2) Toshiba Satilite Laptops that are connected wireless. One laptop will hook up ok but the other one is the one giving me the problem. I have complete access to all components. Thanks for the help. thanks again Cecil

Hi Cecil Thanks for the info. Do you know how to access the router's control panel? I'm not familiar with LinkSys I'm afraid. The problem I had was that the router's DCHP was assigning the same IP address to more than one device, resulting in an IP conflict. All I had to do was to go into the control panel, seek out the section that deals with assigning IP addresses, and manually check all the IP addresses of devices to make sure there's no conflict. In my case, I had to manually re-assign addresses to solve the problem. Also, and I know it sounds obvious, but have you switched of the router and restarted it? I'm just asking because the router would then reassign IP addresses to all devices automatically from the pool. Its amazing just how many problems that solves :) If this doesn't help at all, just let us know - but at least then that will be ruled out! Hey Daniel Yes I have turned off both my router and modem and restarted them a number of times. I set up my laptop with a static address and now have connectivity according to the icon (says connected with excellent signal strength and connected) in the systray but I still am unable to get hooked to either IE8 or Firefox now. Getting so fustrated I am about to wipe it clean and reinstall. This is turning my grey head greyer. Everything works fine when hardwired. Cecil

Hi Cecil Hmm I'm sorry to hear that. Look at it in a positive light - you're one step closer than before! I'll have a think about it over the weekend - play about a bit with my laptop's wireless and look through some more forums and sites I know and hopefully find something of use. You really don't want to do reinstall if you can avoid it - it's a real hassle. Keep thinking positive! Daniel P.S. At least your hair is still on your head! Hi Daniel Ok you keep checking your sources and i'll do the same. Maybe between the two of us we can find a solution to this problem. I know I hate to have to wipe the system and want to do it as a last resort. Don't need to pull out my hair I tend to like it on top of my head. Thanks again for your time and effort Cecil P.S. Have only been playing with computers since windows 3.1.1 just before Windows 95 came out. Took some courses for MCSE but about time i was finishing all the dot coms were failing and the market was flooded with experienced techs so an old newcommer like me (68 now) was S>O>L. I am a lot self taught with some schooling.

Did you ever solve your problem? I am having the same kind of problem with a Linksys WRT54G v5. I have upgraded the firmware and reconfigured the router to previos settings. I click on repair when I ge the Limited or no connectivity message and it disabled and reenables the the wireless adapter and then tries to renew the IP address but is not successful. I almost think think this has happened after downloading Microsoft updates. It is driving me crazy.
