issues with connecting to the internet through a router (windows 7)
I just bought a new Compaq Presario CQ5320F Desktop Computer With AMD Athlon™ II X2 240 Dual-Core Processor from Office Depot with Windows 7 installed. After going through all of the set up I attempted to connect to the internet through a Belkin router that hasn't given me any problems before with the other 4 computers in the house.... but it gives me an "invalid IP configuration" error... but if i disconect the router and go straight to the modem, it connects with no problem. I'm connecting via ethernet cable ...i've tried most of the typical troubleshooting (reseting the modem, reseting the router, and uninstalling the drivers to the onboard ethernet adapter). Looking for help in solving this issue. Thanks.

Are you wired to the router or connecting wirelessly? Do you have Network Discovery turned on? Do you have File and Printer Sharing turned on? What model is the Belkin router (be specific to model and model # plus revision #). What does ipconfig /all reveal from the command line (post the results here). Since most Belkin routers I know off only have 4 ports, how are the 4 original computers connecting to the router? Have you updated the firmware on the Belkin router so it's Windows 7 compatible? Let us know. MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. Need to look carefully at all your settings related to connecting to the router. There is nothing in Windows 7 per say that I know of that would "disable" your ability to use the router. I have 3 desktops going through my router and I changed nothing when moving from Windows XP to Windows 7 on any of them.

Hi, Since the machine can connect to Internet after bypassing the router, we can eliminate the ISP and system cause. It can occur by incorrect router settings. Please try the following steps. 1. Upgrade the router firmware and reset its settings to default. 2. Temporarily turn off firewall on the machine and router. 3. Assign a static IP address on the Windows 7 machine for a test. If the issue persists, please type "ipconfig /all" in command console and post the result here for research. Thanks, Novak
