is this a bug? automatic proxy discovery working in Vista but not Windows 7
Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong section...
I have been trying all morning to set up an IIS server to host a WPAD proxy auto config script.
I have created a DNS A record to 'wpad.domain.local' which points to the IIS server and this works fine (browsing to http://wpad/wpad.dat finds the file), I have removed wpad from the dns blocking reg key, set up the correct MIME type on IIS and I have also
confirmed that the WPAD script works correctly when directly specified in the 'use this script' box
I have since spent approximatly 3 hours struggling with IE8 on Windows 7 Pro to get IE to detect the config file, without any success.
Just as I was about to give up I thought "stuff it, i'll try it on a different machine (running Vista Business, IE7) and the client found the proxy script and worked first time...
The question I now have is: is this a bug with Windows 7 / IE8, or have I overlooked something?

I have just tried this on a test VM with a test user, it also fails to work on Windows 7+IE7
edit: after a bit more investigation in the IIS logs it seems that IE8 is reading wpad.dat but choosing to ignore it..

Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum.
As my understanding, the issue is that Internet Explorer 8 cannot detect WPAD.
Based on my research, this issue may be related Internet Explorer 8 settings. You could try the following steps to check what the result:
1.
Reset the Internet Explorer 8 settings to check the result.
2.
If the issue persists, you could try to change the following Group Policy settings to see how it works:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer > Make proxy settings per-machine (rather than per-user)
= Enabled
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer > Disable caching of Auto-Proxy scripts = Enabled
3.
Automatic configuration does not work in Internet Explorer 8
Meanwhile, I would like to share the following with you for your reference:
Using Automatic Configuration, Automatic Proxy, and Automatic Detection
Automatic configuration does not support certain file types in Internet Explorer 8.0
You could also refer to the similar thread:
Internet Explorer 8 not using wpad.dat
Hope it helps.

It appears the issue is caused by the Auto-Proxy cache in IE, as a work around I've found that resetting IE's settings cleared the fault and the browser would then pick up on the WPAD.dat file..
I think I will take up your suggestion in point 2 and disable the auto-proxy cache aswell as changing the proxy settings to "per-machine"
Many thanks for your help!
