Hi, Have you installed some third party proxy software? You may try to run ipconfig /renew in Clean Boot environment. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 In addition, if you are in the home network, please try to disable DHCP and re-enable it on Router.Kim Zhou TechNet Community Support

1. Try static IP address. 2. I have solved similar problem with computer and ADSL router. The fault was on the router side. Have you tried the connection with another computer? 3. When you are trying to renew DHCP lease, use ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew 4. For troubleshooting give more info on the history of your computer functionality including traces in Event Viewer logs. Rgds Milos

Hi Milos, Thanks for the reply. I get it to work if i set static ip for now. But the thing is that I scared the ip will clash with another ip if I don't set it to DHCP. Any idea how to make it work without need to use static IP? When I set it to DHCP, i could do ipconfig /release. but when i try to do ipconfig /renew, i get access denied, then ip is 169.254.28.137 and the default gateway is empty. any help? Thanks and Regards, Tim

Hi Tim, The 169.* address you're receiving is a so called APIPA address that you usually will receive if your computer can't reach the DHCP server. You are most likely receiving the "Access Denied" error because you have not opened the CMD as Administrator. To do this, right-click the CMD icon and choose "Run as Administrator". I would first look at why you're not able to contact your DHCP server. Instead of setting up a static IP, you can always set a reservation in DHCP, which gives a certain IP address to a certain network MAC-adress, but that will unfortunately not help you now...Blog: www.danielclasson.com/blog | LinkedIn: Daniel Classon | Twitter: @danielclasson

Hi Daniel, Thanks for the reply. I've run the command using the Administrator, but it still give the same result : access denied when i tried to do ipconfig /renew. as for setting a reservation in DHCP, how do I do that?if giving a certain IP address, isn't it like giving a static IP to it? Is there any way that the DHCP is working again?as it's my friend's laptop that got the problem and I afraid if using static IP, it may clash sometimes and she wouldn't know how to change it. Any suggestion? Thanks and regards, Tim

Hi, Not sure why you're receiving the Access Denied error... You could always try and deactivate and reactivate the network card and see if it solves your problem. 1. Remove the static address if you've set one 2. Go to Network and Sharing Center -> Adapter Settings 3. Right-click your network card and press Deactivate 4. Wait a few seconds for it to deactivate and then right-click and reactivate it again. Setting a reservation in DHCP is not really the same as a static IP. The difference is that the DHCP server will never give out the reserved IP adress to any other computer than the one specified and there will therefore be no IP clashes.Blog: www.danielclasson.com/blog | LinkedIn: Daniel Classon | Twitter: @danielclasson

timotmot Do you have any other user account on this PC you can login and test with? If you knew the local admin account for instance and tested successfully with that, you could then add yourself to the local admins group. If you tested with the admin account and it failed, you could consider doing a repair install on the OS, or we could look into some registry settings.
